How to Social Distance the Paso Wine Way

(Virtual Wine Tasting)

Right now, weddings are paused, festivals are on hold and all hot dates have been put on a massive block of ice. Social distancing is frustrating at best, downright heartbreaking at worst. Alas, staying inside doesn’t have to mean giving up the pleasure of enjoying new Paso Robles wine offerings.

In fact, these ingenious Paso Robles tasting rooms have banded together to ensure you can still sip, swirl and smile, all without leaving your couch. During these trying times, a simple joy can go a very long way to boost morale! Plus, you’ll feel good knowing you’re giving back to the local wine industry, which has been hit hard as of late.

View all of the AMAZING Paso Robles Wine Country SPECIAL OFFERS.

1. Bring the Tasting Room to You

We truly have arrived in the “future,” my friends. Virtual tours and tastings have been around for a while, but they’ve soared in popularity lately, as you can surely understand. Book your own virtual wine tasting by clicking over to Monochrome Wines, the only Paso Robles tasting room focusing exclusively on white varietals. Parrish Family Vineyard (pictured) will host their own virtual tasting each Friday at 5 p.m. (after you are officially done working from home, of course). Join David Parrish and certified sommelier Vanessa Igel for a drink, a fun live chat and a pairing—plus, get 50% off shipping with code SHIP, 10% off chardonnay and zinfandel with code TEN, and grab Sauvignon Blanc bottles for just $16 each. And Sextant Wines just hosted their first virtual wine tasting Tuesday evening which was attended by over 100 people! There will be more to follow starting April 2 with a newly featured 3-bottle pack that you can order online.

Feeling cooped up around the house? Many Paso Robles Wineries boast their own virtual tours. Eberle Winery offers up a vivid virtual tour of its breathtaking grounds (pictured) so that you can have a moment of wine country sun (even if it’s cloudy outside). Plus, you’ll also get free ground shipping with the purchase of four bottles or more (include promo code HOME20 at check-out). Note: This special offer cannot be combined with other promotions and flat rate shipping excludes Hawaii and Alaska or any prohibited states. Excludes overnight and 2-day shipping. You can also enjoy Parrish Family Vineyard’s stunning virtual tour including views of their vineyards.

2. Order Online (and Reap the Rewards)

Everything is in upheaval right now, but there is one small silver lining: There’s never been a better time to save on wine shipping costs. Paso Robles wineries are sweetening the deal for folks who order online right now. Four Lanterns Winery is offering free shipping on purchases of six bottles or more (and you can also get free delivery for homebound folks in Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero). Just contact jackie@fourlanternswinery.com. Allegretto Wines is taking 50% off shipping through March 31, and Hoyt Family Vineyards will give 20% off wines for non-club members and 30% off for non-members (good through April 1). Paix Sur Terre Winery will offer $1 shipping on all orders and 10% off all wine purchases with promo code DEAL (offer good till March 31). Sculpterra Winery (pictured) is also jumping on the bandwagon with a generous free shipping offer to all California residents through March 31 with a minimum order of two bottles (36 max), plus 20% off gift cards and curbside pickup available for the locals. If your wine cellar—or wine cabinet, shelf, or closet—is looking a bit bare—now is the time to stock up and save. (Sculpterra also has a virtual tour!)

3. Have a Wine Festival of One

Sadly, the anticipated Vintage Paso: Zinfandel Weekend was only one of many great events canceled over the past week or so. Sure, it’s disappointing—but did you know you can bring the festival to you? Sample Paso’s heritage varietal with a special offer from Pelletiere Estate Vineyard and Winery (pictured). All zinfandel shipments to California residents through March 31 are 25% off. Plus, get $10 flat rate shipping (for six bottles; use code Vintage6) or 30% off with $5 flat rate shipping on 12 bottles; use code vintage12. Harmony Cellars is also carrying on the ZinFest tradition, sans the actual festival. Save 10% off zinfandel through April 1 and take advantage of free shipping on wine orders of six or twelve bottles (California residents only. Call 805-927-1652 to order). Allow wine fest for one to commence!

Supporting Paso Robles Wineries during Coronavirus

True, the new Coronavirus has muted many of the joys that give our lives sparkle. For the time being, we’re asked to sequester inside our homes and—as you probably already know—California wine tasting rooms have been requested to shutter until further notice. Our top priority is staying well and helping to stop spread of this fast-moving illness. Still, the Paso Robles wine community will continue to do what it does best—provide you with fantastic wines. Now, you can look toward unique wine deals designed to brighten an otherwise dark situation plus online tasting events with talented winemakers and virtual tours of some of our favorite wineries to enjoy from home!

How can I help support Paso wineries?

Shop online or by phone (and take advantage of deep discounts in the process). Anatomy of a Perfect Paso Robles Picnic Basket

We’re not just talking about packing a lunch, people. Here in Paso Wine Country, we know how to pack a punch! Bud break has begun and the weather is perfect for sunny spring spreads spent outdoors. Paso Robles wine is a must, of course—but do you also have a handle on the appropriate edible accoutrements? Whether you unfurl your picnic blanket in the meadow, the vineyard or just on the lawn of your favorite Paso Robles tasting room, make sure you have all the essentials on lock. Happy nibbling. Nom nom!

1. Mighty meats

Real talk. A picnic without cured meats is a picnic we’d rather not attend. Charcuterie—whether in the form of prosciutto, salami, ham or pâté—truly makes the meal. Try a local producer, like Alle-Pia, purveyors of all natural hand-crafted Italian salumi (their storefront is in nearby Atascadero, but you can find their meats at General Store Paso Robles in, among other Paso Robles area retailers). Their sopressa salami, made with zinfandel and a cayenne pepper kick—will play well with Lusso Della Terra’s 2015 Zinfandel, a zesty (and worthy rival) if there ever was one. Extra credit: book a tour of the Lusso Della Terra vineyard, where you’ll get a barrel sample paired with a killer cheese and charcuterie spread (no picnic-packing required).

Mapping and Directions to Lusso Della Terra click here

2. Cheese, please

Will you make the grade? You might think you know your cheese (perhaps you do know a bit). However, we’d be willing to bet you’ll learn something new about those aged wheels at Vivant Fine Cheese in Paso Robles. Stop by this  popular downtown cheese shop and pick up a cheese plate to go. Trust us:  grab a wedge of Fromage d’Affinois Honey Bee Goat Gouda for your basket (it practically begs for a glass of Oso Libre 2018 Rosalinda Rosé). Bright, crisp and refreshing with a burst of strawberry, watermelon and citrus, this wine has it all: drinkability and minerality to spare. Lunch with a view: Fancy picnic locales abound in Paso Robles, but some come with an extra special setting. Head to the Oso Libre’s tasting room, on a hilltop with views of their vineyards, grazing sheep and cattle in scenic west Paso. Stunning!

Mapping and Directions to Oso Libre click here

3. Gelato-yeah!

Luscious, authentic artisan gelato? Check and check! You’ll be glad you brought the cooler and those ice packs when you dig into your first bite of this Paso Robles frozen treat. With flavors like blueberry cheesecake, butter pecan and coffee chocolate chip, there’s a scoop for every taste at Leo Leo Gelato, set to open its debut Scoop Shop at the upcoming Paso Market Walk next month (be sure to also check their website for a list of local locations to pick up a pint). A bottle of citrus-y, 2018 Sextant Grenache Blanc balances well with Leo Leo’s nutty coconut macadamia gelato flavor. With kiwi fruit, and tart green apple on the tongue and lime-pear aromas dancing on the nose, this wine truly screams for ice cream. Or, well—gelato.

Mapping and Directions to Sextant Wines, Paso Robles click here

4. Get a buzz on

Along with nuts, olives, and dried fruit, a drizzle of local honey is simply required for a perfect Paso picnic. In fact, we think a dollop of “the golf stuff” has a nifty way of pulling all those wild flavors together (yes, even the stinky cheeses). For a sweet pairing, pick up a bottle of Lone Madrone’s 2015 Points West White, built upon a solid foundation of roussanne. The Rhone varietal’s classic honied characteristics—bolstered by a touch of picpoul blanc and viognier—showcase not just a round mouthfeel, but impressive acidity, too. Find local honey at Paso Robles’ vibrant farmer’s market, which kicks off at Downtown City Park farmer’s market each Tuesday from 3-6p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon. We must say, Lone Madrone’s tasting room and patio also make for a fab picnic spot (plus, they serve burgers on select Sundays throughout the spring and summer months). Come on now. Pour some honey on me!

Mapping and Directions to Lone Madrone click here

5. Butter is better

It tastes so good to be bad! Is there any snack on earth as irresistible as an oh-so-warm brown butter cookie? Salty, sweet, buttery, crumbly—these naughty, flavor-packed (and high calorie) morsels deserve a spot of honor in your picnic basket. Hot tip: Downtown Paso Robles is home to local bakery Brown Butter Cookie Company (just follow your nose). That’s a very good thing, since you’ve already packed a chilled bottle of Four Lanterns’ Sparkling Noir, a pinot noir rosé made in the traditional methode champenoise. Time to pop some bottles and release those bubbles. Dessert can happen any time of day in Paso Wine Country.

Toast to Zinfandel at these Paso Robles Wineries March 20-22

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay! Raise a glass to zinfandel, Paso Robles’ punchy heritage grape this spring. In Paso Robles, winemakers march to their own drum beat. Why not follow that groove off the beaten path, where a slew of “zinful” events await? Yes, we’re talking Vintage Paso: Zinfandel Weekend March 20-22! The thrilling three day celebration encompasses a range of “zinscursions,” including a Zinposium Seminar and Z After Party. Plus, dozens of participating wineries are pulling out all the stops, ensuring you have one wild weekend to write home about. From lively winemaker dinners and intimate pairings, concerts and more, this annual ode to zinfandel offers up a vibrant opportunity to take part in the past, present and future of this personality-packed varietal.

1. Italian vibes at Pelletiere

Plush pleasure awaits at Pelletiere, known for elegant, Italian varietals produced in the famed Paso Robles Willow Creek District. Among these bold characters you’ll find top notch sangiovese, montepulciano, nebbiolo, lagrein, and primitivo (yes, also known as our friend zinfandel). Enjoy terrific tastings paired with delicious accompaniments, plus live music, specials and giveaways planned throughout the entire festival weekend. Take in the stunning views of their vineyards and swoon over their wines. Closer than an Italian vacation—and far less expensive.

2. DIY your lunch at Robert Hall

Roll up your sleeves and eat like you mean it. On March 21, from noon to 3 p.m., the Robert Hall tasting room will be transformed into a bustling soiree. Enjoy wine and (get this) DIY wood-fired pizza! Not sure you know how? No worries. Pulcinella Pizza will guide you through stretching, rolling and topping your own pie. As the pizza bakes in a traditional wood-fired oven, you’ll have plenty of time to take in the vineyard view from the terrace. You do good work!

3. Release the Oxen!

Oh, sweet release! Seven Oxen will release new wines on the world on Saturday, March 21 with a pick up party of epic proportions. Swing by the tasting room from 5 to 8 p.m. for live music, a tasting flight and gourmet burger made by chef Jacob Lovejoy (tickets are $25 each for the public, free to club members). Always in tune with the land, Seven Oxen is known for producing wines true to terroir. Celebrate the birth of  the winery’s 2016 vintage, but sure to get your hands on these bottles fast! With just 500 cases produced, these limited boutique wines are as rare as they are remarkable.

4. Joy is served at JUSTIN

Come on baby, light my fire. This March 21-22, celebrate Vintage Paso Weekend at JUSTIN, where live music and mingling will overflow from the terrace patio. Grub down on gourmet barbecue paired with special barrel tastings and let the good times roll on. Known for always providing casual education at every tasting, you’re sure to leave with a heightened appreciation for Paso’s heritage grape (and fancy barbecue sauce).

5. Everyone loves Eberle

Ask anyone. Zinfandel pairs with barbecue like no other wine, and Eberle is here to prove it. March 21-22 from noon to 5 p.m., belly up to the winery’s famous tri-tip bites prepared by Gary Eberle and friends. In addition to complimentary tasting, you can also take advantage of a free Cave Tasting from 11-4 p.m. End the day digging some awesome music from Jason Cade on the Vineyard Deck (yes, you might just feel like dancing. Go with it).

More info

6. Say howdy to Rangeland Wines

Agriculture meets wine culture at Rangeland Wines, and our rumbling bellies sure do love that combination. Sample the winery’s 2017 Zinfandel and taste a forthcoming 2018 barrel sample during Zinfandel Weekend—but make sure you come hungry. On Saturday, March 21 from noon to 4 p.m., the winery will serve its famous estate grass-fed beef and lamb hamburgers next to their beautiful pond. Yum! Round out the meal with a salad and cheese and charcuterie plate, if you’re feeling extra peckish.

7. Continue to party on Zinfest Weekend, there’s more!

Oh, there’s so much more! On March 20, Opolo Vineyards will host a fabulous winemaker dinner, Cass Winery will host a special Sunset Social and Peachy Canyon will feature a winemaker-guided tasting that’s oh so good.

Throw Your Worries to the Wind in Paso Robles Wine Country

Come on, get happy! Let your hair down, kick your boots up and watch your cares melt into that perfect glass of wine. Forget the overpriced beach resort or hectic amusement park. Paso Robles Wine Country is the best place to throw your worries to the wind. With casual tasting rooms, unstuffy winemakers and a general sense of natural wonder and whimsy, stress is no match for a day wine tasting through pastoral Paso Robles. Here’s 5 laid back tasting rooms sure to obliterate any lingering sense of unease, no matter how many emails are waiting for you back in the real world.

1. Chronic relaxation at Chronic Cellars

Chill: Make room and play. Few tasting rooms are as relaxing as Chronic Cellars, where you can play a host of grown-up lawn games or even shoot some pool while shooting the breeze. Bring the kids, the dog and the whole gang—you’ll want to linger for hours throwing the frisbee, comparing tasting notes or just tossing the bean bag around.

Tasting room: www.chroniccellars.com/visit

Try: Rosé is the official drink of “off the clock.” Raise a rosy hued glass to your empty agenda (and throw on a pair of  proverbial rose colored glasses) at Chronic Cellars. Overflowing with fresh watermelon and strawberry bliss, the winery’s 2018 Pink Pedals Rosé will inspire you to lose yourself in the lushness of the moment.

2. Mingle to the max at Hope Family Wines

Chill: At Hope Family Wines, you’ll enter a modern tasting room crafted for lounging, mingling, and (of course) stellar sipping. Say hello to new friends and find your perch for the afternoon. With comfy couches and lively community tables, you’ll find good conversation and smiling faces around every corner! Sip at your own pace or head to the vineyard for an impromptu picnic. Look at you, barely checking your phone!

Tasting room: www.hopefamilywines.com/austin-hope/visit

Try: Sip on the sunny side of the street. Layers of peach and bright citrus elevate classic Chardonnay to a fresh, light outlook. Yes, this 2018 Austin Hope Chardonnay is your ticket to a golden moment in the Paso Robles sun. Bask in it!

3. Cowboys, bikers and winemakers at Iron Oaks Winery

Chill: Corrugated steel, rustic barn wood and an American flag on the wall make Iron Oaks Winery’s tasting room feel more like a roadside cowboy hideout than a fancy tasting room. That’s by design, darlin! Dougie, owner and winemaker, is the real deal. Boot scoot up the tasting bar and you’ll sip Doug’s fabulous wines as approachable and awesome as the atmosphere.

Try: Bite into the best! Featuring locally raised, sustainable beef sourced from Doug’s family’s DD Cattle Co., you’ll savor robust reds at this rustic roadhouse (and can take home rockin’ beef to throw on your barbie). Plus: enjoy live music, sports on TV and a pet friendly vibe, irreverent games and a shoot the boot contest too with Dougie there to urge you on to victory.

4. Just Peachy at Peachy Canyon Winery

Chill: Not only can you relax under a clear blue sky at Peachy Canyon Winery’s Old School House Tasting Room, you can also check-in to nostalgic comfort. Located on a hill surrounded by nearly 50 acres of vines, you’ll find a cozy vineyard cottage. With two bedrooms, two and a half baths, living room, family room, kitchen, pool table, barbecue and panoramic views, even your extended family will want to take a few vacation days.

Chill: www.peachycanyon.com/The-Canyon-Inn

Try: Perk up! Peach-pink in color, Peachy Canyon’s 2018 Rosé smells of strawberry, guava, and lychee. Bright, acidic and flavorful on the palate, give in to a wave of strawberries, peaches, nectarines, and mandarin orange. If this dreamy offering doesn’t lower your blood pressure a few points, we don’t know what will.

But it Now

5. Leave the planning to Penman Springs

Chill: Get back to what really matters. A warm, hospitable atmosphere at Penman Springs makes it easy to relax and enjoy the sweeping vineyard views. Plus—with abundant events this spring and summer, you’ll never need to plan a thing. Stop by the tasting room during Vintage Paso: Zinfandel Weekend (Friday, March 21 noon-4 p.m.) for live music on the patio from Bear Market Riot, delicious bites and one killer glass of wine.

Events: www.penmansprings.com/events/

Try: Pack in the pleasure. Penman Springs 2014 Penman Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is as classic Paso as you can get. The dark ruby color, rich nose of cedar and berry, and a bright palate of  plum, currant and spice make for a long finish (and longer  moment of joy).

Plan Your 2020 Spring Break in Paso Robles Wine Country

When it comes to Spring Break planning, we could all use a little help. Instead of wondering where you’ll take those precious vacation days, allow us to reveal the plan, right down to the transport, lodging and activities! Spring Break 2020 is your chance to live it up in Paso Robles Wine Country. Don’t miss your moment! Experience the sights, the fun and the flavor, down to the very last drop. Yes, this is your golden opportunity to experience world class wines in an unforgettable setting. Break out the flip flops and make a run for the hills. Your dream itinerary awaits.

1. How to Fly or Drive Paso Robles

Wow, that was easy! Conveniently located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Paso Robles Wine Country is closer than you think. With more direct flights arriving daily at nearby San Luis Obispo Regional Airport, you could be just a few hours from enjoying Spring Break amidst the vines. Ride the rails with Amtrak and take in the gorgeous scenery, including the Central Coast of California’s breathtaking coastline, beautiful at sunrise or sunset. Once you arrive, get ready for warm hospitality like you’ve never experienced before. Expect short lines, zero traffic, friendly tasting room staff and a general sense of well being. Howdy, partner. You’re on your way to becoming a local.

2. Pick your passion

Sky’s the limit. Whether you prefer red, white rose or a craft cocktail, Paso Robles Wine Country is the best place to quench your thirst for adventure this Spring Break. There are dozens of varietals growing in Paso Robles Wine Country, and each grape has it’s own distinct charm. Encounter 18 different varietals at ONX Wines, known for pushing the envelope and crafting unique blends. Located in Tin City, a former warehouse district now home to dozens of colorful epicurean delights, the ONX tasting room offers sensory experiences that incorporate a blind tasting of five sumptuous selections. Yes, all this diversity at one single tasting room! Better get used to it. With more than 300 wineries to choose from in Paso Robles, including breweries and distilleries too, your Paso Robles flavor adventure is truly of the “choose-your-own” variety.

3. Eat like you mean it

No, it’s not a dream: many Paso Robles tasting rooms feature elegant culinary offerings, too. No, we’re not just talking about a cheese plate (although those are quite nice). Whether you stop in at Parrish Family Vineyard, JUSTIN, Villa San Juliette, Opolo, Cello at Allegretto Vineyard Resort or Cass Winery, expect not just a fabulous lineup of wines, but also a sit-down restaurant style dining experience. From small plates to full-on entrees, you’ll come hungry and leave inspired. Itching to drool over a few menus unfolding this spring? Click here and eat your heart out. Tip: Don’t forget the locally grown olive oil, another Paso Robles Wine Country staple! Taste a range of extra virgin olive oil samples—from grassy to buttery—at Pasolivo’s downtown tasting room or at the scenic ranch, where you can take a farm tour while you nibble. Rio Seco Winery and Dubost Ranch Winery also have some of our fave extra-virgin olive oil made from their estate olive trees.

4. Lay of the land

See the bigger picture. Before you embark on your Spring Break adventure in Paso Robles, inspect the map (click here for a free downloadable map that we can promise will come in very handy). Notice the distinct wine trails, each with its own specialty. Highway 46 West, which snakes through Templeton to the coast, features breezy tasting rooms offering all manner of experiences (Tooth and Nail Winery, housed in a storybook castle is known for its robust live music and events schedule). The wineries of Highway 46 East are nestled in Paso’s dusty and authentic agricultural region (stop by Bodega de Edgar, known for passionate Spanish varietals). Downtown tasting rooms have their own allure, thanks to easy walkability and close proximity to boutique shopping and award winning restaurants (Hoyt Family Vineyards is as must-see downtown stop, featuring expressive wines grown from Malibu to Monterey). Worried about keeping it all straight, even when you’re out of cell range? No worries.  Get driving directions that stay on your phone, even if you lose service! Tip: Leave all the pesky driving to a professional and check out these awesome transportation and tour offerings.

If peace and quiet suite your mood, go for a vacation rental off the beaten path. Eden House at Carriage Vineyards Bed and Breakfast features an entire home overlooking lush vineyards as far as the eye can see (so that you can pretend you really do live here full time). Want the hands-on winery experience? The Inn at Opolo is located at fun-loving Opolo Vineyards, where wine, wood fired pizza and good conversation comes with every check-in. 5 Spring Flings in Paso Robles

The hills are alive with the sound of bees buzzing, birds chirping and wine glasses clinking! Yes, heavenly spring vibes are on their way and the undulating, green landscape of Paso Robles is calling your name. Time to plan that vacation (and click “purchase” on those sandals you’ve been eyeing)! In Paso Robles Wine Country, the weather is truly sublime, the folks are always friendly and the wine is simply top notch. From picnics in the sunshine to tantalizing tasting events unfolding under the clear blue sky, there’s never been a cheerier time to traipse through the tulips.

1. Be bold, be beautiful

Take the bull by the horns this spring and head to Anarchy Wine Company’s Tasting Room in Paso Robles, where the rock music is loud, the style is bold and the wine is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted before. The winery’s 2017 Tao Del Toro is as fiery and stunning as a famous Paso Robles sunset. A mix of unruly Spanish Tempranillo and luxurious Cabernet Sauvignon, this rebellious blend pairs perfectly with a picnic spread of alluring cheeses, olives and charcuterie.

2. Unleash the Wines of the West

Why settle for one when you can try a whole stampede? Conveniently located on Highway 46 West in the heart of Paso Robles wine country, Wines of the West offers unique hand-crafted wines from four local producers, including Clayhouse and Purple Cowboy wine flights (while the adjacent CANtina Lounge pours Alloy Wine Works and If You See Kay “canned wine” selections). With two distinctive tasting experiences, there’s a wine for every mood. This spring, splash into a rosé brimming with fun personality to spare. With a salmon pink color, aromas of white flower and flavors of watermelon and fresh tart cranberries, Purple Cowboy’s 2018 rosé is dry, lively and crisp, with a delicately sweet finish.

3. Through the looking glass

You’ll feel a little like Alice and Wonderland tumbling through the magical looking glass, but that’s the best part! Surrounded by a breathtaking topiary and sculpture garden, Sculpterra Winery is a dream setting to celebrate the first blush of spring in Paso Robles. Sip delicious wines while admiring towering statues carved into everything from a puma to a wild mammoth. This spring, be sure to try the winery’s 2018 Chardonnay, a classic expression of the varietal bursting with rich aromas of sandalwood, orange peel and even French toast.

4. Find your inner harmony

Cruise west on Highway 46 and you’ll feel the ocean breeze tickle your skin. Is there anything more refreshing? Just a few miles from downtown Paso Robles, you’ll find a coastal oasis atop a storybook hill. Yes, we’re talking about Harmony Cellars, perched above the nearby village of Harmony (population 18, if you count the cows). With a range of fabulous wines to sample and fun-loving events—like their March 14 St. Patrick’s Day shindig featuring live Irish music and food from noon to 4 p.m.–you’ll never want this fairytale to end! Our advice: Pick up a few bottles to remember this magical afternoon by (for spring soirees, we love their 2018 White Riesling, featuring a lively bouquet of honeysuckle and stone fruit).

5. Relax on the lawn

When is the last time you lounged on fresh, springy grass and looked up at the sky? Four Lanterns Winery’s sprawling green lawn is the perfect locale for lallygagging, laughing and throwing the frisbee for Fido. Sample a rainbow of bright acid driven wines, including the winery’s 2018 Rosso de Passo, a bright, juicy and fun red that’s light and zesty enough to keep you seeking sip after sip. Have a big group trip in mind? Stay in the vacation house, surrounded by vines and featuring spacious suites, a family room, kitchen, dining room, pool and Santa Maria grill (accommodates three couples or two families). Of course, you can also just stay for the afternoon—not a bad way to while away a spring day in Paso!

Even More Ways to Spark the Romance in Paso Robles

Put down the romance novel and cancel those dinner reservations—a real whirlwind love affair could be swirling in your glass! Grab your partner by the hand and make a break for Paso Robles Wine Country, where each bottle is bursting with passionate experiences tailored to bring you two closer together.

Traverse the lush vineyard terrain (nibbling delightful bites along your way) and end your adventure under a blanket of twinkling stars each night. Whether you’ve just met that special someone in your life or you seek to rekindle that old spark, Paso Robles Wine Country is where your love story gets interesting. The plot thickens!

1. Fall for a romantic red

There’s nothing more sultry than sharing a velvety bottle of red wine with your lover. We adore the vibrant blackberry charm of Lusso Della Terra’s 2014 Petit Verdot. Ribbons of plum, dark cherry and cassis meet a luxurious and rich mouthfeel (trust us, one sip will lead to another).  ONX also offers up a divine date night sipper, especially when paired with a candlelit dinner. Their 2017 Brash blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Mourvèdre, ripe with spirit is jammy and bright, food friendly and boasts a weighty entry of rich plum boysenberry jam that cascade into a palate of fresh figs and cranberry. You’ll be giggling like you’re on your honeymoon in no time.

2. Day to night Paso

Immerse yourself in Paso Robles romance from daybreak to sunset. Cherish your special time together with a weekend trip (and promise to power down the iPhones before you step foot out the door). Explore Michael Gill Cellars plush tasting room, inspired by the luxury of French hunting lodges. Sip fantastic Syrah selections (20 all Gold and Double Gold medals received this year!) and admire the ancient oaks and green vines from a cheery patio. We recommend their 2016 Syrah that won Double Gold and Red Wine of the Year. Come nightfall, stay either at Michael Gill Cellars Vineyard Cottage or at Rio Seco Winery (pictured), where suites are replete with kitchenettes, and nestled in the vineyards. Of course, you’ll also find plenty of world class wine at the tasting room (or in your own room). And remember to pick up their estate-grown, hand harvested, extra-virgin olive oil. It is the BEST of the BEST…we keep our kitchen stocked, in fact we switched from liters to purchasing this liquid gold in gallon containers. Yes, we are smitten, and know you will be too!

3. Taste the love

In 1996, Linda and Chris Behr of Oso Libre Winery purchased 90 acres of raw land on the Westside of Paso Robles. Slowly, they developed the land and turned it into a sustainable, modern working ranch replete with alpaca, sheep and cattle, that hosts over 25,000 annual visitors. Their love story has become a true dream come true for their entire family (the kids are also involved in the ranch and winery). Allow your love story to collide with theirs at Oso Libre Winery’s upcoming Valentine’s Day Winemaker Dinner. Savor an intimate evening featuring a succulent five-course feast prepared by Chef Jeff Scott. Cheers to the road—and romance—less traveled! (Check out their virtual tour!)

4. Playful in pink

You and your main squeeze deserve to let loose and live a little! At KROBAR Distillery, craft spirits are the modern cupid’s arrow. Join the KROBAR crew on February 15 for a special Rosé Cocktail Party. This is not your average blush, however: Expect a unique love potion crafted with Grey Wolf’s Rosé and Krobar Pink Gin (our fave)! To add to the fun, all spirits products will be 10% off!

5. Pink passion

Looking for more pink passion? Rotta Winery’s 2018 Syrah-Grenache Rosé is a flirty blend of bright nectarine, strawberry, rhubarb and peach. No wonder, Rotta sits on some of the finest grape growing soils in the famed Willow Creek District of the West side of Paso Robles and is part of the Mendoza, Argentinean Budeguer Family wineries that have an environmentally conscious approach. Fredrick Bizzotto is their winemaker who crafts unique and unforgettable wines that are fresh, vivacious, modern and very impressive.

6. Turn up the heat

Been a while since you’ve taken the time to cook together? Stop by Rangeland Wines and pick up an incredible cut of beef to prepare with love (and sip lots of wine while doing so). The winery’s estate raised, natural grass-fed beef is always dry aged to perfection, so you can expect a truly memorable meal together. Although you can pick-up this marvelous meat locally at J&R Meats in Paso Robles, it’s more enjoyable to pick up your selection at the Rangeland tasting room, where you can sip a lineup of high caliber wines.

Another fave of ours is Iron Oaks Winery. They offer locally raised, damn good, sustainable beef from owner/winemaker/cowboy, Doug’s family ranch that you can pickup at the tasting room along with bottles of sumptuous wines (plan on playing a few rounds of hilarious “Shoot the Boot’). From their land to your plate with quality you can taste. And you know what they say: Couples who grill together, stay together!

Trendy Toasts to Pair with Paso Robles Wine

Let’s face it. “Toast”—whether topped with avocado, Ahi, or organic grass-fed yack butter—has become the trendy new fad. No, “artisan toast” is not an oxymoron, although it sure sounds like it! Long gone are the days when you could slap a piece of Wonder Bread with a slice of ham and call it a day (now we’ve got chia seeds, sprouts, superfoods, and balsamic reduction to think about).

We don’t make the foodie rules around here, but we sure do love breaking them! In Paso Robles Wine Country, winemakers craft wine by the beat of their own drum. Why not pair fancy toast with an equally high caliber bottle? Instagram pic, right? I mean, as delicious as a perfectly coiffed piece of thick sliced raw-honey-and-elderberry toast might be, the double taps make it all the more tasty!

1. Salted Avocado Toast with a Rhône White

Creamy, satiating and chocked full of “the good fat,” avocado has long been a staple on menus across Paso Robles Wine Country and California as a whole. When sliced and fanned artfully atop toasted sourdough bread and sprinkled with flaky Himalayan pink sea salt, the meal is elevated into a simple yet profound kind of art. When paired with Écluse’s 2016 Prelude, a citrusy Rhône style white with a hint of honey, you’ve got a masterpiece on your hands.

Icing on the cake is Écluse’s other fabulous wines that consistently win top awards. And their super friendly, family owned, chill boutique winery couldn’t be more grounded and lovely; a beautiful reflection of their wines. They have even been named one of the top 25 wineries in the US by Travel and Leisure Magazine. No surprise here!

And dog lovers, you’ll want to scoop up Écluse’s Blind Dog Wine that honors two of their blind winery dogs. One pup was a hearing assist dog for their property caretaker. They generously donate a percentage of the proceeds to Dogs for Better Lives in Oregon. Their worthy cause rescues shelter dogs and trains them as hearing assist dogs. This touches our hearts!

2. Goat Cheese and Fig Toast with a Jammy Zin

Whole grain wheat bread, when toasted, brings out a touch of innocent sweetness. Add a thick smear of tangy fig preserves and you’re onto something sultry. The pairing becomes sexier still with the addition of two things. One: Dover Canyon Winery’s 2017 Cujo Zinfandel (with flavors of dark berries and sweet plum), and Two: several generous dollops of goat cheese.

Bonus! When you visit Dover Canyon, you will enjoy a small and intimate experience in wine tasting with Glenda or Dan, a noteworthy Paso winemaker with an impressive background that includes working in the cellar with iconic, Gary from Eberle Winery (known as the Godfather of Wine in Paso). Consider bringing a picnic and enjoying beautiful views of the westside countryside with your glass of Dover Canyon Zin – it will be a forever memorable experience. From Yelp: “Although my palate was mostly fried by the time I got to Dover Canyon, I could tell from the first sip of their zinfandel that this was a special winery”. Zin lovers, this is for you!

3. Mushroom Kale Toast with a Structured Red

Toasting a wine barrel brings out certain characteristics, like caramel and oak. The same is true when you toast bread. A firm rustic loaf full of seeds and nuts becomes downright complex when toasted to a deep, dark brown. Next: Add kale, roasted mushrooms and a swirl of olive oil. Yep, you’re looking at a crunchy, hearty dinner! Pair with a strong red with firm tannins, like Bodega de Edgar’s 2017 Priorato, a haughty blend of Caringnan and Syrah boasting elements of coffee, tobacco and dark tart fruit.

Paso locals love Edgar’s story, and we believe you will too; Born to Mexican immigrants seeking a better life for their family, Edgar’s wine journey started humbly (a wonderful trait that he has never surrendered) as a bus boy then waiter in a popular Paso Robles, CA restaurant. There he was exposed to many great wine producers. Several became friends and eventually opened their doors to his learning desires (applause team Paso!) and landed him a job as a cellar rat (an endearing term as the bottom of the ladder, go-to guy who tackles whatever job is needed in the cellar, no matter what time of day or night.) This allowed him to move on to learn the many complex and varied aspects of making wine and to learn how to navigate the wine industry. Working and saving, in 2004 he decided to invest in the purchase of 4 barrels and grapes rather than attend college (we’re glad he made this call, as are his many enthusiastic followers – taste his wine and you’ll be one too). His quick study and enthusiasm for producing great wines brought he and his wife to launch their own prized brand in 2007, Bodega de Edgar. (Bodega is the Spaniard term for a winery or cellar.)

Starting at just 250 cases, the winery is now approaching 2,500 cases. As always, his focus is on sourcing the highest quality fruit from vineyards (who practicing sustainability) to produce the best wines.

4. Almond Butter Banana Toast and a Spicy Mourvedre

Ditch those boring after school snack days. Salty almond butter and creamy banana come together to create a distinctly satisfying topping for cinnamon raisin toast (especially when topped with a drizzle of honey and cinnamon). Pair this morsel with an equally enthralling fruit forward Mourvedre featuring pronounced spice elements reminiscent of cardamom and sandalwood. Yes, we’re talking about Paix Sur Terre’s 2017 Been Away Too Long, which takes the whole flavor combination into strictly “adult” territory.

A must-visit, uber-boutique family owned winery, Paix Sur Terre (French for “Peace on Earth”) is passionate about crafting wines from unique varietals not found anywhere else in Paso Robles. The wines consistently receive praise from notable wine critics, trusted periodicals and journals, sommeliers and, most importantly, visitors to its tasting room. We also love their AMAZING labels designed by Jon Blythe who creates a new piece of art for each vintage. Looking for something unique? Paix Sur Terre is for you!

5. Apple Gorgonzola Toast with Grenache Blanc

Strong, distinct gorgonzola plays up mild, sweet red apples. The toast should be neutral—perhaps a hunk of fresh French baguette lightly toasted on a cast iron pan. Allow the fresh elements of Kiamie Wine Cellars 2018 White Kuvee (with hints of peach schnapps, tarragon and spiced applesauce) to bring this sassy snack to the next level. Better than dessert!

Another must-visit, uber-boutique Westside winery, Kiamie is housed in a fittingly uber-petite, rustic outbuilding that used to be a tack room on the historic Ramage Ranch homesteaded in the 1800’s on Adelaida Road between Tablas Creek Winery and Justin. While there get your furry love from the 2 winery dogs, + dog in a goat suit, named, “The Goat”, who cruises around the tasting room areas. As Greg says, The Goat thinks he is a dog with the exception of when he devouring the cacti + blueberry bushes.

Adam Bauman, the winemaker, takes great pain to delestage during fermentation. Delestage (day-leh-staj) is a labor intensive, fermentation + maceration technique used in red winemaking that gently extracts phenolic compounds by oxygenating the juice to produce a less astringent, softer wine that exhibits more fruit character. In French, délestage means “lightening”, in reference to lightening the tannins in wines.

Fall in Love with Paso Wine Events Perfect for Lovers

Love is in the air! Or is it in the wine? In Paso Robles Wine Country, we tend to believe the latter. We do adore our wine—and our events, tastings, and winemaker dinners—all year round. February might mean dormant vines, but that doesn’t mean our hearts aren’t beating strong for the next vintage! February ushers forth a slew of sensual events celebrating the passion behind each bottle. To make wine is to make love, eh? Faire du vin c’est faire l’amour! Everything does sound better in French, even if we do prefer our wine sourced from right here in Paso Robles. What can we say? Paso wine is our first and last great love affair.

1. Get sensual!

Parrish Family Vineyard has pulled out all the stops in the “sweep you off your feet” category. First off, the tasting room will transform into a swanky lounge during the Single & Ready to Mingle event, slated for Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14. If you’re single and looking for love, head to Parrish Family Vineyard and meet someone new (at least you know they have great taste in wine, just like you). Next, prepare to be indulged, mind body and soul. Enter: Dinner in the Dark event, a food pairing unlike any you’ve ever experienced. You’ll use every sense (besides your eyes and hands) during this unique feast. Guess the first mystery item based on smell, taste and texture. Sounds easy right? Well, the room will be dark and you, my friend, will be wearing a blindfold and poncho! Next, sample a true blind tasting (no, you won’t be able to see the color of the wine) and guess what variety you’re enjoying. Lastly, use all of your senses (sight and touch included) to enjoy a paired dinner with all the items from the first challenge paired with wines from the second. Like a good romance, this last meal is best enjoyed with the lights on!

2. Isn’t it romantic?

Dust off the cufflinks and diamonds. There’s just something so delicious about getting dolled up for a black tie dinner, right? Look dashing (and savor decadent flavors with your love) at Eberle Winery’s Black Tie Valentine’s Day Dinner in the Caves. If the word “cave” doesn’t instantly bring to mind soft lighting and candle-lit romance, think again. Eberle’s Wine Caves are a sight to behold. The dynamic atmosphere—barrels and exposed rock—lend itself to an intimate and cozy date night experience. Plus, Executive Chef Kurt Metzger of San Francisco will bring his acclaimed French-California cuisine to the table, ensuring that you and your sweetheart are moaning with culinary delight from start to finish!

3. The perfect blend

A good romance—and lasting relationship—is about the blending of two hearts, two worlds. After all, Paso Robles winemakers love to blend wine, mixing varieties to craft something unique and delicious. You and your sweetheart love drinking them! Book a stay in Paso Robles—or along scenic Highway 1—for a romantic getaway to top them all. Featuring 40 renowned wineries, including Hearst Ranch Winery, Oso Libre, Peachy Canyon Winery, Hope Family Wines, Brecon Estate, Ecluse Wines, Lone Madrone, Seven Oxen Estate Wines, Tooth and Nail winery, JUSTIN Vineyards and Winery. 4. Cheese me, darling

Perhaps we’re a little Old World, but the word “cheese” and “love” are often interchangeable around Paso Robles! If you and your honey love good cheese as much as we do, make a date for Lone Madrone’s annual cheese tasting, slated for Feb. 1. Every year, Chef Jeffrey Scott imports an obscure wheel of cheese from England and shares it with the Lone Madrone tasting room (what a sweetheart!). With help from the winemaker, a totally unique pairing menu is then created and everyone is invited to sip and nibble to their heart’s content. The cheese this year is truly remarkable: Westcombe Cheddar sourced from a dairy established in Somerset, England in 1890. According to the tasting room folks, this cheese is “deep and complex, with a mellow lactic tang and long notes of citrus, hazelnut and caramel.” Better yet: some call it a “five mile Cheddar,” as you’re still tasting it five miles down the road! If strong sharp cheese is the way to your love’s heart, then congrats. You’ve found your soul mate! Perhaps bring a few breath mints for both of you.

5. Love is like a box of chocolates

Chocolate has a rich history (and is associated with romance for good reason). Share in all the sweet details—and learn the basics of making fine chocolates—at Cass Winery, known for hosting fun hands-on events all year round. Understand the history of chocolate and take home recipes for an array of sumptuous morsels at a class hosted Feb. 13 at the winery. Come with your sweetie or friend and enjoy  nibbles and wine pairings as you sample your sweet creations. You’ll even take home a unique decorated box of your own chocolate dipped treats to share with your love. Haven’t had enough romance quite yet? Set your sights on Cass Winery’s Valentine’s Day Dinner, hosted in the winery’s elegant Barrel Room. Set in the middle of a sprawling vineyard with 360 views of the vines, you and your date will enjoy a beautifully crafted meal by candlelight coupled with exceptional wine. Forget about making reservations and hunting for parking. Do what we do in Paso and opt for a romantic night in the vineyard. Oh, how sweet it is.
