Usher in 2018 With These Awesome Wine Deals!

January is a clean slate for a reason. We couldn’t possibly continue into the New Year with the same ferocity (or else we’d all end up crazy exhausted, broke and very bloated). It feels so good to start over, but we still need to have fun, too! After all, green juices and gym classes do not a social life make. Right now, we’re all watching our waistlines and our wallets, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy the best food and wine experiences Paso Robles has to offer (in moderation, of course). If you’re looking to take on 2018 with gusto and great grenache, you have come to the right place. Take a gander at these awesome wine deals, coupons and more. They’re so good, you might even be tempted to be a little bad. Everything in moderation, right?

2. Cheers to the New You at Fish Gaucho

New Year’s Eve debauchery is for the reckless and wild, and chances are, you didn’t last till 11 pm anyway. A more grown up, low key fiesta is in order to usher in 2018 right. There are probably even good friends you haven’t caught up with in a while due to all that family entertaining and traveling. Get back to basics at a casual and charming spot in downtown Paso Robles where the margaritas flow and the salsa is fresh and vibrant. Fish Gaucho is that perfect place. Enjoy traditional California-Mexican food with a healthy twist (well, healthier than gingerbread cookies and egg nog). Inspired by the shores and fresh flavors of Baja California, the menu is created from the freshest seafood and local produce. To celebrate Restaurant Month, Fish Gaucho is offering a three-course dinner you won’t want to pass up. Yes, this is one deal you will want to share with friends! Click here for more info.

4. Get Your Healthy Dose of EVOO

The doctor keeps telling you that extra virgin olive oil is a super healthy fat to be drizzled often! Guess you should probably make a date for a fun olive oil tasting excursion at Pasolivo, right? Right! Grab a partner in crime and some bread for dunking, too. This rustic, scenic Paso Robles tasting room is the best place to unwind and reflect on the past year (and all the junk you ate). Here’s a complimentary olive oil tasting for two, so you’ll be encouraged to swap that artery-clogging butter for a fresher, more delicious oil in 2018.

Paso vs. The Other Guys: What Makes Wine Pure?

Are you a wine purist? Well, you’ll sure want to be after reading this alarming (but true) blog post. Cheap, bulk wines may have a place in American supermarkets and liquor stores, but they’ll never have a place on our tabletops here in Paso Wine Country. From adding “tannin powder” to increase structure in a sub-par wine to illegal cases of adding diethylene glycol (used in brake fluid) to dubious bottles, it seems that the world of cheap bulk wine is all about the bottom line. In Paso Robles, this couldn’t be farther from the case.

The grapes in Paso Robles are far too incredible to ever dilute, doctor, or disguise. In this world renowned wine region, winemakers strive to express the flavor of each grape, the vintage, and the land, and that means keeping things pure and honest along the way. That means in Paso, all you’ll only taste fruit, acid, tannin, minerality—and perhaps a little French or American oak. Not so much with the other guys. Beware of these 5 Dirty tricks employed by winemaking imposters, and when in doubt … pour it out!

1. The Dirty Trick: Dyes

Yes, you heard right! Plenty of bulk wineries add a coloring agent called Mega Purple to give their wines a deceptive, deep purple hue. According to the Daily Beast, winemakers use an estimated 10,000 gallons of the stuff every year, and because only a tiny amount is needed to fix an entire barrel, Mega Purple is probably being added to over 25 million bottles of wine annually. We all know that dyes are obviously unnatural and that some are even harmful to our health (how many of us have ridded red dye from our kids’ diets?). Next time you pick up that $6 bottle of richly colored purple merlot, remember that you’re probably looking at something akin to a colored sports drink. Put it down and just walk away.

The Paso Pure Way: Drink the Rainbow (Naturally)

If you order a glass of grenache, mourvedre or petite sirah in world renowned Paso Robles, you’ll certainly taste the rainbow—but never to the detriment of your health. Each wine has its own distinct natural color due to the kind of wine grape used and the amount of skin-to-juice contact during the winemaking process. This is how it should be. Like people, wine grapes come in all colors—and all are gorgeous. This is why Paso winemakers allow each unique grape to express its rightful beauty: from delicate, light garnet to vivid cherry red to a dark, inky maroon that appears almost black in the glass.

Try: Talk about a colorful wine! Tooth and Nail’s 2014 Glutton is a medium bodied syrah blend bursting with herbs and spices, plus seductive cherry and dark fruit. Note the rich, dark red color in the glass. That’s all natural, baby.

2. The Dirty Trick: Added Sugar

So you’ve made a cheap-o wine and it’s got a ton of flaws. What do you do? Well, many bulk winemakers would quickly grab the sugar. What for? Think about it. More sugar means more alcohol, and more alcohol “blows out” the flavor of the wine while adding a richer mouthfeel. Win win? We say lose lose!

The Paso Pure Way

Paso Robles has been known for its “bigger” wines—especially higher alcohol Cabernet Sauvignons—throughout the years. But don’t confuse this natural occurrence with what the tricksters are up to. While some Paso Cabs are naturally higher in sugar due to a longer, warmer growing season, the fakers physically add sugar to the grape juice prior to fermentation. In Paso Wine Country, this is a sin punishable by banishment! Just kidding. But seriously, this just isn’t done in Paso

Try: Opolo’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is balanced with just an elegant sugar-to-acid ratio, thanks to a warm, long growing season and keen winemaking. Experience this wine’s exuberant nose of pepper spice, red currant and mint. Unlike the other guys, it’ll age well for 10+ years.

Mapping and Directions to Opolo Vineyards

3. The Dirty Trick: Oak Chips

Sipping on a cheap red, you might find the traditional flavors of oak. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll soon find that this wine never saw aging in barrel. Instead, the fakers have added oak chips to their staves. Why on earth would someone do such a thing to a wine? Well, aging in oak barrels is expensive—it adds at least $1 to each bottle of wine. Cheap-o winemakers care more about profit than crafting an honest bottle.

The Paso Pure Way

Whether aged in French, Hungarian, or American oak, Paso Robles wines are routinely aged for anywhere from eight to 20 months. This time spent in the barrel adds incredible complexity to the wine, including some of those traditional oak characteristics you might have come to love (caramel, toast, vanilla among them). In Paso, we know that paying a tad more for a premium bottle means getting the real deal (and it’s so much more delicious). Seems like a small price to pay, eh?

Try: Taste what 17 months in once-used French oak barrels actually tastes like. JUSTIN’s 2015 Zinfandel is big, bold and balanced with full bodied fresh berry flavor and subtle oak notes. You can bet that’s the real thing.

5 Reasons Why Even YOU Can Be a Paso Winemaker in 2018

Some will vow to lose that last fifteen pounds; still others will announce their intentions to start that genealogy blog, some will promise to send out thank you cards for their wedding (now two years overdue), while the rest of us will say we are truly “going to get serious about that daily _______ (fill in the blank).” That’s right. New Years resolutions have arrived and (as always) threaten to be broken! Did you ever consider that perhaps your past resolutions didn’t quite stick because part of you truly didn’t truly want to do XY&Z?

This year, go for a really FUN resolution—one that you’ll want to accomplish and see through! You don’t have to be a certified sommelier or even a fancy wine enthusiast to make great wine. It’s rewarding, fun, educationally stimulating, and—of course—tasty. Here’s 5 reasons why you can make wine with the best of ‘em in 2018!

1. YOU Can Take a Class in Paso Robles

No, you don’t have to be born in France or come from a vineyard-owning family to dabble in winemaking. In fact, The Wine Boss Lounge located in downtown Paso Robles is offering winemaking classes in the New Year (fall 2018 – sign up now), so that means you have zero excuse not to dive in head first. Plus, The Wine Boss Lounge is located near a dozen fantastic wine tasting rooms, including Bodegas Paso Robles, Hoyt Family Vineyards and Tudor Wines. Taste before or after your class for even more hands-on education. For a class schedule or private lessons, email Thomas at WineBoss88@gmail.com or call 805-369-2677.

Wine Boss Lounge

Founder and Owner, Thomas Booth has been part of the county’s wine industry since graduating with a B.S. in Viticulture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2010. He is the brains behind helping you become a master winemaker.

Bodegas Paso Robles

Bodegas Paso Robles tumb logo
Bodegas Paso Robles is dedicated to producing wines using Spanish and Portuguese varietals. They take old world vines and make new world wines of the highest quality with the least invasive winemaking practices. Bodegas winemaker, Dorothy, consistently crafts small-lot wines that pull in double gold awards.

Hoyt Family Vineyards

When Carol and Stephen first decided to leave Hollywood and move to Malibu they either wanted a home where they could walk to the beach or grow grapes. They happened upon a property that could do both. In 2001 they planted their first vineyard in Malibu which has expanded to an estate vineyard in Paso. Carol is the celebrated winemaker behind their trove of award winning wines.

Tudor Wines

The family began growing grapes in California early in the 1900’s and continues to farm premium table grapes  to this day. Tudor specializes in crafting world-class, luxury Pinot Noir that receives high scores from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.

2. Winemakers…They’re Just Like Us!

In Paso Robles, everyone’s “locally famous,” but no one’s a rock star. This town is just too down-to-earth for any kind of pompous attitude, no matter how high your latest wine might score. While we’re proud to be home to many multi-generational vineyard growers and winemakers, there’s plenty of people who stumbled upon winemaking as a second or third career. Eclusé Winery owners Steve and Pam Lock are a great example. As native Californians, wine had always been big in the couples’ lives, but they hardly thought it would ever become a profession. By chance, they visited a friend in Paso and fell in love. The next thing they knew, they were planting 30 acres in Paso soil. Their first vintage came in 2001—and since then many awards—they’ve never looked back. You don’t have to look hard to find similar stories just like this all over the region.

Écluse Wines

Écluse is dedicated to producing limited production, handcrafted, award-winning wines from their estate, Lock Vineyard. You can experience wine tasting the old fashion way, in the barrel room where you’ll often find Steve, proprietor and winemaker, with the wine thief offering barrel samples!

3. You Don’t Need Your Own Vineyard

Plenty of amazing, high-scoring Paso Robles wines are made by winemakers who lack their own estate vineyard. In fact, these creative winemakers often have the advantage of picking and choosing exactly which fruit they desire depending on the vintage. An aspiring winemaker can easily purchase high quality grapes from a local Paso Robles vineyard farmer or broker at a reasonable price. Celebrated Rhône style winemaker Ryan Render of Rendarrio Vineyards sources his wine grapes from the best vineyards across the Central Coast. By working this way, he creates standout bottles that shine with a unique terroir. Whether you plan to make one barrel or ten, this is an inspiring thing to consider.

Rendarrio Vineyards

Winemaker, Ryan Render, was born and raised inside the Orange County curtain of Irvine California. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and since 2003 he has been committed to handcrafting wines of quality and distinction at his micro-winery. Wine Spectator recently scored his 2014 Syrah, “The Lost Ones” at 93 points!

4. You can Borrow and Share Equipment

Sure, there’s plenty of equipment you’ll need to make even the smallest batch, super rustic wines. However, you can rest assured that Paso Robles offers up several places where one can rent and borrow everything needed, from crusher/destemmers to barrels, tanks and hoses. Don’t believe it’s that easy? Check out the local group Wines and Steins for help with equipment checklists, home winemaking tips, seminars, resources and more.

5. You’re Smart Enough (We Believe in You)

Yes, making wine is hard work, and if you are planning on embracing on your own DIY wine making journey, you probably know this to be true. You’ll need to bring your scientific mind (math, measuring, and critical thinking) as well as your creative side, as winemaking is as much an art form as it is a craft. That said, you’ll get so much out of it. You’ll grow, learn and accomplish a task that once mystified you. You’ll have a fresh understanding and enjoyment of wine tasting, too. From throwing informal “bottling parties” with help of friends and family to being able to gift unique homemade bottles for birthdays and holidays, home winemaking can truly enrich your life. Just uncork a bottle of Kiamie Wine Cellars 2014 Meritage, a rich red blend. Think about the time, effort, and aging process that went into that single bottle. If this thought inspires you, you’re well on your way to the first step.

Kiamie Wine Cellars

Adding Extra Joy to Your Holidays

To add extra jolly to your holidays, we are sharing some recent posts about some stand-out wineries. We wish you a Merry Christmas and raise our glasses to salute all of you, the undyingly loyal Paso Robles wine enthusiasts. Cheers!

1. Rangeland Templeton

Pasorobleswineries 🎵 and a partridge in a pear tree 🎶 really, just 2 roosters (so Paso) in an apple tree outside Rangeland’s new tasting room and garden patio in Templeton where they share space with Natures Touch, a local organic grocer and nursery.

Templeton is a fave cowboy town of ours about 10 minutes south of Paso off the 101. Now we have one more reason to pop into this darling, quaint town, that like Rangeland wine, is authentic and without complications. Rangeland’s 1,500 acre ranch (40 acres planted) yields pure wines that have not been fiddled with except by their 200 sheep who graze between the vines when they’re dormant, adding their own natural fertilizer and eliminating 2-3 mowing passes and the use of herbicides. Here at Adelaida Springs Ranch, where Rangeland Wines are grown, their diversified family farm (grapes, wine, grass-fed beef, sheep and honey bees) are owned and tended by Laird and Lisa Foshay.

You’ll usually find Laird in his signature cowboy hat pouring his wines in the tasting room. It’s a treat to sit and chat with him while savoring his wines…he’ll share interesting country-life tidbits about Indian artifacts they’ve found on the ranch, wildflowers, stories about eagles snatching livestock, cougars drinking from the cattle’s water trough, and other abundant wildlife that calls Adelaida Springs Ranch home. Look for the 2 roosters when you visit Rangeland’s tasting room. They are collectively named “The Boys”.

2. Vines On The Marycrest

We’re ushering in Winter (Solstice) at Vines On The Marycrest cool tasting room warming our toes and souls in front of their fireplace with a Zinfandel blend. Lovely views of their vineyard, now but naked vines, on the hill beyond remind you that indeed Winter is here. what better time to gather round a cozy fire with fine wine to share stories and experiences that illuminate life.

Proprietors, winemaker, and vineyard manager, Jenni and Victor have captivating real-life adventures to reveal while pouring their premium wines for you…who else can recount the planting of their first vines in West LA on nun’s property (done withOUT their blessing), diverse rock stars and musicians befriended as a sound engineer in LA, and lovingly selecting and planting thousand of vines after the back-breaking work of ripping out hundreds of abandoned almond trees on their 20 acre Estate Vineyard.Thank you Victor for the upcoming 2018 concerts you’re hosting at the winery, including 2 time Grammy nominated Robbie Fulks on March 17.

In our glass today is My Generation, a Zinfandel blend from Vines On The Marycrest (micro-winery)
Tasting Notes – Deep ruby in color with aromas of cassis and woodsmoke (yes to be enjoyed in front of a crackling fire), and a hint of licorice. The wine exudes a supple, rich and broad appeal with smoky flavors of dark berries and cola. Like life it is complex, ripe, and for most, focused. The blend finishes with a gentle tannic grip and a lingering note of sweet dark fruit. 49% Zinfandel, 33% Syrah, 9% Mourvedre, 9% Petite Sirah.

3. Four Lanterns

Four Lanterns Lamplight 2016 Viognier – Selected as the favorite in a vertical Viognier tasting! The stone fruit flavors are nicely balanced with the right dose of acidity. Pair with seafood dishes (thinking Lobster on Christmas Eve), spicy food & chicken dishes. Four Lanterns Winery sits on 35 acres on the west side of Paso in the Willow Creek AVA & is housed in a rustic wood barn surrounded by Vineyards & gardens. Their 30 year old Viognier & Syrah vines produce lovely wines in addition to their Picpoul Blanc, Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Mourvedre, Claudette Blanche, & Ugni Blanc. The addition of their production facility last year enables their wines to be estate grown & produced. They specialize in wine varietals native to France’s Rhône Valley & Bordeaux regions.

For those who want to experience what it’s like to live on a vineyard, They have a charming, fully restored farmhouse with a swimming pool that you can rent on airbnb & vrbo.

4.Tooth And Nail

We’re storming the Tooth And Nail Castle with their high scoring Chardonnay 90 POINTS WINE ENTHUSIAST – Amor Fati 2015 Murmur Vineyard Chardonnay (Santa Maria Valley).

Tasting Notes from Wine Enthusiast – “Light and delicate on the nose, this single-vineyard Chardonnay shows white peach, honeysuckle and browned butter on the nose. There is good tension to the sip, but also riper flavors of apple cider, pan-seared pear and lemon preserves.”

We love reading the flavor profiles that various wine experts compose. So many of us pick up different characteristics when tasting and smelling the same wine making our individual wine tasting an adventure!

Here is another take on this lovely Chard from the wine experts @liquorama –

“Displays a lush, velvety mouthfeel, seamlessly integrated minerality, and a crisp lingering finish that begs for countless more. Medium to full body, finishing brioche flavors, a hint of hazelnuts and brown sugar.”

Click here for mapping and directions to Tooth And Nail

5. Hug Cellars

Wine from Hug Cellars paired with cheese from Sant’Ambrogio Market, Florence – The 2014 Clevenger Vineyard Zinfandel screams of dry cherries, cranberries, and cinnamon spice, with hints of dry raisins. The palate delivers a mouth full of ripe cherries, fruit roll up, spices, and a nice chalky texture from the unique Paso terroir from which it was sourced, Clevenger Vineyard. This is a unique vineyard with head-trained vines located in the southern foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. This vineyard is over 40 years old, and was started with clippings from the prestigious Ueberroth/Willpete Vineyard.

Enjoy this lovely Zin with BBQ, braised short ribs, and Tri-tip steak. 90 cases produced. Edgar the winemaker, says to enjoy this Zin now, or enjoy through the next 5-7 years. Cheers!

5 Best Gifts for Wine Lovers

You’re prepared for gifting the outdoor lover, literary fanatic, new mom, and food-obsessed on your holiday list. But what about the hardcore wine enthusiast? With December quickly approaching, we can understand your panic. No worries, though. We’ve got you! This is Paso Robles Wine Country, after all. We know a thing or two about gifting (and receiving) wine-centric parcels. Pick up these five wine-lover approved gifts and you’ll be giving Santa a serious run for his money. Oh Santa, you really should switch from milk to Mourvedre!

A (Super) Smart Wine Preserver

When you drink a lot of wine, you find yourself in a pickle. Some bottles may not stay as fresh as you’d like, especially if multiple bottles are open for expansive at-home tastings and comparisons. The answer? Save the day (and the wine) with a state-of-the-art wine saver. It’s 2017, people. The day of the simple hand-held pump are over. Our phones are smart, so shouldn’t our wine gadgets be, too? Try this electric wine preserver, which comes with a quick-acting vacuum that sucks the air out with the simple touch of a button. Just another example of how living like the Jetsons ain’t too bad.

Rosé All the Way

Have a girlfriend obsessed with the pink stuff? Show her how much you know her heart by gifting this lovely tribute to the prettiest wine around. Not only will this cute pillow look perky on her blush-colored sofa, but it will inspire #roseallday hashtags through the New Year! In case you hadn’t noticed, 2017 saw a major rosé trend, with T-shirts, chocolate bars, phone cases and more. Now is the time for the Rosé fanatics to rise up and claim their rightful spot in the sun! Extra credit: Pair this gift with a chilled bottle of Paso Robles rosé. Too adorable!

A Non-Boring Coaster Set

Coasters? Really? If you think that these measly squares of material are only for wedding registries of folks you barely know and bland housewarming gifts, think again. You may not know this, but you should: There are coasters out there made specifically for wine bottles, and they are actually gorgeous as can be. Check out these fancy marble wine coasters, perfect for placing a chilled bottle of Chardonnay on a lovely wooden table (without any worry of ring spots). This is exactly what your best friend’s holiday centerpiece is missing!

Organization is Key

For those Container Store lover out there: We see you. There’s absolutely nothing stuffy about this modern wooden wine rack, which holds bottles up top and glasses down below. If you can’t think of a couple who need this handy contraption, you might be reading the wrong blog. Not only does this sleek piece look great in any home (thanks to its neutral, natural finish)—but it’s also a sure fire way to get yourself invited to every dinner party from here till infinity. Double whammy.

A Bold Red Wrapped in Ribbon

Sextant buy the wineGive: Nothing says the holidays like a big, robust, crowd-pleasing red perfect for celebratory family meals and seasonal soirees. Pick up Sextant Wines Wheelhouse Zinfandel and know that you are gifting a flavor profile all will covet. Packed with wild strawberry, raspberry, and spice, it’s also far more desirable (and better smelling) than potpourri.

Get: Sextant Wines in San Luis Obispo is ground zero for local history and an epic lunch while picking up bottles for everyone on your list. Explore the iconic Old Edna Town site, grab a delicacy from the deli case and taste through this longtime winery’s incredible selection of chardonnay and pinot noir. A Juicy White Delight

Give: Baby it’s cold outside, but it makes the wine taste all the more scrumptious! Harmony Cellars 2016 White Riesling is bursting with apricot, citrus, and honeyed indulgence. To what does this fine off dry holiday white owe its extra expressive fruitiness? You can thank an extended, icy fermentation. Brrr! Perfect to pair with an ugly sweater and a holiday cheese plate, this wine is ready to snuggle up to your gift list.

Get: An escape to Harmony, Ca (the tiny hamlet with population 18, if you count the cows) is always in order during hectic holidays. Here in this coastal oasis, glass blowers create their wares and the tasting room beckons from atop a breezy hill. You owe it to yourself to relax with a wine tasting, and after all, Harmony is just a hop, skip and a jump from Paso Robles. Don’t forget, there will also be an open house Sunday Dec. 3 from noon to 3 p.m. Featuring a cork craft table, treats, and more.

A Practical and Tempting Treat

Give: Everyone’s cooking this time of year, so why not gift a practical—and totally classy—epicurean gift? Extra Virgin Olive Oil grown in Paso Robles has become a hot commodity among the home chef set, not to mention the area’s many celebrated farm-to-table restaurants. Ready-made gift baskets are available now at Pasolivo, meaning you don’t have to struggle with ribbon and cellophane. We suggest the Holiday Favorites gift basket, featuring citrus EVOO, boozy cran-cherry chutney, winter ambrosia vinegar, orange blossom honey, and more. It’s like the holidays in one simple (non DIY) basket!

Get: While wine tasting, stop by Pasolivo for a journey through the farm’s latest offerings. What a fun and fanciful snack between stops! Sample lime, rosemary, citrus, and more. You might even need to pick up a few extra accouterments—salts, vinegars, and housewares too—for your own kitchen collection.

Wow ‘em with These 5 Fool Proof Turkey Day Pairings

I don’t care what kind of family you’re from, you’ll probably agree: Togetherness is always more fun when there’s feasting involved. From the cheese and olive plate to the mashed potatoes to the cranberry sauce to the (drumroll please) main event—Thanksgiving is all about the food! Here in Paso Robles Wine Country, that means it’s all about the wine too. Well, the wine pairings that is. Impress your friends and family with these winning combinations and you might even earn a place at the top of the Thanksgiving Host Pantheon. Wait, there’s no such thing as that? Bah! We want our award. I mean, after serving up these 5 perfect food and wine pairings with a gracious smile, we totally earned it, right? If you can can’t wait to taste grandma’s gravy alongside a new vintage, this post is for you.

1. Stuffing and Sparkling

The bready smack of a carb-laden stuffing (whether tucked with veggies, olives, fruit, or even meat) calls out for the fresh clearing qualities of sparkling white wine. Toast to your good fortune (and good company) with a sparkling Grenache Blanc served slightly chilled.

Clavo Cellars Grenache Sparkling Wine is a celebratory masterpiece that will make the rounds all night long (everyone loves bubbles). Ripe fruitiness is heightened by shaved lemon zest and tart green apple, a fall fave. Extra points for dicing and roasting a few apples in your stuffing.

 2. Mashed Potatoes and Viognier

Heavy fats call out for lightness! It is simply inevitable—just like the post Turkey Day food coma. Buttery, dense mashed potatoes and unctuous gravy are cut with bright levity in this ying-yang pairing.

Soaring Hawk Vineyards NV Barrique Blanc, a crisp 100 percent Viognier, offers up lots of refreshing acidity alongside a bounty of stone fruit and a hint of French oak. A sip of this wine between scoops of potatoes will have you coming back for more (and more…and probably more).

Buy now

3. Cranberry Sauce and Pinot Noir

The earthy, subtle, and complex trappings of a good pinot noir effortlessly heighten the zing of cranberry goodness, whether eaten by the spoonful or dolloped upon crackly, caramelized turkey skin.

Try Tudor Wines 2007 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, which splits the difference between rich, ripe black fruit flavors and dusty, cedary tannins. It’s down to earth yet still totally elegant. Just like the table setting you took weeks to prepare.

Buy now

 4. Yams and Riesling

Cutruzolla 2014 Riven Rock Riesling is no one trick pony. This fruit forward gem is epic when paired with sweet buttered yams, but also plays well with neutral turkey—and even heightens that weird ambrosia you’ve been scared to try. Intense and pure, the nose expresses notes of lime, meyer lemon and crushed quartz. Creamy, mineral driven and incredibly balanced, this wine is your secret weapon against guests who confess they “have no idea what kind of wine they like.” In other words: This is a supremely drinkable selection that’ll be gone before you can say “pass the rolls.”

5. Port Style Zinfandel with Pie

Thanksgiving is a boon for pie lovers, who can take their pick from traditional apple, local olallieberry, and—of course—iconic pumpkin. Pour a small chalice of Rotta Winery 2013 Zin Port Leather and Lace and watch as the pie-lovers and port lovers converge.

This fruity port style wine is dripping in flavors of blackberry and raspberry, yet offers up a fresh minerality to balance out any extra jamminess. Warning: Family stories, some savory and some not so savory, may start flowing from this selection.

5 Tips for Your Paso Wine Country Winter Vacay

Winter in Paso Robles Wine Country is unlike anywhere else on earth. It’s not just the temperate days and friendly people—it’s the world class wines you’ll discover while you’re here. If you’re planning a trip now through spring, congratulations! You’re coming at the most relaxing time of all. Between harvest in autumn and bud break in spring, you’ll experience the most chill conditions here on the Central Coast (plus, all the heart warming holiday traditions). Remember these 5 tips for a perfectly Paso winter vacay and you’ll be sure to stay merry and bright.

1. Stay Cozy

Warm winter days in Paso rarely dip below 60 degrees, but that doesn’t mean we’re immune to the shivers. Many wine lovers actually know that Paso Robles is indeed famous for its warm, temperate days and cool (sometimes downright frigid) nights. This incredible swing in temperature—often as much as 50+ degrees between day and night—create fantastic, balanced wines that boast both juicy sugar and refined acid. So, pack your cowboy boots, denim shorts and t-shirt, but also make room in your suitcase for a sweater, vest or coat for comfy evening outings.

2. Bring your Shopping List

Downtown Paso Robles is old fashioned, charming, and amazingly friendly. You might think that a downtown square so “old timey” might be packed with antiquated offerings. You’d be wrong! Situated alongside some of the most incredible farm to table restaurants in the county, you’ll also find fabulous boutique shopping that rivals the coolest neighborhoods anywhere. A plethora of wine tasting rooms downtown also mean that you can swing by a tasting room and pick up a few bottles—or a case—just in time for holiday gift-giving.

3. Know your Paso Stay Style

Are you into vineyard views and plush robes or are you more of a keep-it-simple traveler? Whatever your Paso stay style, we’ve got you covered. From resort-style accommodations with heated pools, luxurious bedding, and gourmet meals to budget-friendly rooms with outstanding quality for your buck, Paso Robles is the perfect place to find your home away from home. Prepare ahead of time and find which stay suits you best.

4. Hit the Tasting Trail

Harvest may be over in Paso Robles and the vines may have gone dormant, but the region’s more than 300 winery tasting rooms remain as lively as ever. Traverse the vines and oak studded hills by day, where blue skies rarely threaten rain (let alone sleet or snow). Pop in for a quick taste, longer flight, or even a snack or full meal (each tasting room is different – all are amazing). Added bonus: Since winter is considered “off season” here in Paso, you are certain to come across amazing wine discounts on your wine trail travels.
