Dine in or takeout at these 5 Fab Paso Eateries

Pop those corks and slather on the hand sanitizer! Restaurant owners in Paso Robles are celebrating the momentous re-opening of their dining rooms (and that means you can finally get your flavor fix). Of course, safety precautions are top of mind: dining establishments are mandating face coverings for staff, ramping up cleaning efforts and removing the lion’s share of tables and chairs so that only a limited few may dine at one time. Not ready to venture out to a restaurant just yet? No problem. These 5 fabulous Paso Robles eateries also offer impressive to-go options, including bottles of wine, cocktails and more!

Note: Heading out for a marvelous meal in Paso Robles? Do call or visit the restaurant’s website/social media before making the trip. Many of these new hours are temporary and may be subject to sudden changes.

5. Cass Winery

Mood: What if we said you could enjoy a meal amidst the vines and never even get up for your next taste of wine? Sip Local with these 5 Paso Spring Releases

We’re all in this together, right? Whether you’re buying hand-made face masks on Etsy, picking up burgers to go from your favorite restaurant or sending a not-so-virtual tip to the local hometown band as they perform a Facebook livestream, we’re all thinking about how we can support the businesses and artisans that make our community great. Here in Paso Robles Wine Country, some wineries may not be taking IRL (in real life) visitors yet, but the vines are ripening and the bottling continues. Give these new spring releases a round of applause! When you purchase wines via curbside pickup or traditional delivery from Paso Robles wineries, you’re not only giving these hardworking winemakers props during a difficult time. You’re also spreading the love financially in a very real way. So, go on. Support—and sip!—local. It’s easy with these 5 spring releases calling your name:

1. Clear your palate with Hayseed and Housdon 2018 Chardonnay

Clean the slate. Handpicked, hand sorted, and hand made, the wines at Haysweed and Housdon are truly crafted with care. If you tend to steer clear of oaky, buttery chardonnays in favor of something fresh, the winery’s 2018 Excuse My Dust Chardonnay is totally for you. Dry, crisp and clean, this stainless steel fermented, Chablis-styled chardonnay offers up notes of white peach, lemon zest and a subtle minerality on the finish. Plus, it’s a perfect companion to grilled shellfish, aromatic cheeses and dried fruits—all of which will make your lockdown a little more luscious. BONUS: profits generated through the sale of the wine are split 50/50 with RISE, a SLO County based organization that provides crisis intervention to survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence. Support two causes with one stone!

2. Have a good day with ONX 2018 Field Day

Cooped up in side the house all day long? Take this one to the patio and really soak up those rays. As refreshing as a big breath of ocean air, this sauvignon blanc-grenache blanc blend features a fresh fruit bouquet that instantly transitions your mind to vacation mode. Pineapple, passionfruit, and green apple pleasures are overlaid by a meadow of white freesia, oleander, and honeysuckle bliss. It all finishes in a wave of meringue, peach, and lychee followed by a last burst of acidity (think of this as a flavorful exclamation point). BONUS: ONX is also featuring a virtual tasting kit they can be shipped directly to your door. The five-pack mix of mini reds and whites is perfect for introducing your tastebuds to ONX without leaving your comfiest beach chair.

3. Honor wine history with Harmony Cellars 2018 Reserve Pinot Gris

How many corks have they popped over 30 years? Hard to say. Established in 1989, Harmony Cellars owners Chuck and Kim Mulligan built their boutique winery to reflect the serene and unpretentious beauty of Harmony (population 18, if you count the cows). Now, despite the struggles that come along with a worldwide pandemic—Harmony Cellars continues to offer that handcrafted taste to their fans far and wide. The Winery’s 2018 Reserve Pinot Gris is light and fruity, crafted in the French Burgundian style and finished dry. Expect aromas of ripe pear, citrus and tropical fruit, flavors of juicy pear and citrus and a finish that smacks of shortbread cookie. BONUS: Harmony Cellars’ Spring Set Special—featuring their Rosato Vivo, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon—is a fab deal on fresh spring flavors. Grab the trio for yourself or send to a loved one as a gift. It feels good to do good, doesn’t it?

4. Think pink with Austin Hope 2019 Rosé

The Hope Family wines story begins way back in 1978 and spans multiple generations and wine labels. Now, more than ever, you have the power to support family owned wineries who have given everything to the land. Austin Hope’s 2019 Rose is a great place to start! Not only does it pair perfectly with anything you might throw at it (and who knows what you’ve got left in your pantry), but this rosé is guaranteed to please whoever you might be sheltering in place with. A provence style rosé with aromas of strawberries and watermelon, this fresh, crisp wine finishes with a subtle minerality on the palate. Perhaps you can’t take that trip to France this year, but you can relax under the stars tonight with this chill companion in hand.

5. Thrill yourself with Iron Oaks Flipside – And they are OPEN now (call to make a reservation)!

If you start looking forward to supper about an hour after you’ve head breakfast, you’re not alone! Lack of meaningful daily routine has elevated dinnertime to a whole new meaning. Give that complicated new recipe something to really stand up against with a bold California white blend from Iron Oaks. The winery’s Flipside is a little big country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll (and a whole lot of delicious). According to the winemaker, it was “born from the suburbs of Los Angeles but stowed-away to the country.” I guess if you want to know what that truly means, you’ll have to try it for yourself. What fun! With a floral nose of lemon blossom and stone fruit and a hint of lemon cremè bruleè on the palate, this baby will leave you with a clean finish and a wild hair.

5 Netflix and Chill Paso Wine Pairings We Need Now

Like the best kind of comfort food on Earth (which just so happens to be the kind mama used to make), classic comfort movies have a way of calming and quieting our busy minds. We could all use a mental health break right now, and—thankfully—Netflix has the answer. These cozy, feel-good flicks are just what the doctor ordered to get you out of those quarantine doldrums (even if you can’t bear the thought of getting out of your quarantine yoga pants). Here’s exactly what  Paso Robles wine you should be drinking while you laugh, cry and hog the popcorn. Cheers to two hours well spent!

1. “Hook” pairs with Allegretto Wines

It’s been more than three decades since the beloved film “Hook” entered the theaters and our took residence in our hearts forever. Still, I bet you lovingly remember Robin Williams’ amazing performance as a cheeky, grown-up Peter Pan.

Never Never Land awaits: Growing up can wait. For now, bathe your senses in pure pleasure. We’re talking about Allegretto Wine’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, full of dark chocolate and savory notes.

Buy it now

2. “Jerry Maguire” pairs with Lone Madrone

You had me at a young Tom Cruise. Watch the leading man charm ooze from your screen (even as a high-strung sports agent he’s just so cute). Pair with a dreamy, whimsical Rene Zellweger and you’ve got a spark! Hello date night. Welcome back!

Show me the wine: Fall madly for  Lone Madrone’s rich and powerful 2016 Mourvedre, a love bomb of smoke and spice in one richly hued purple package. Plus, get 1 cent shipping when you buy six or more bottles (UPS Ground)!

Buy it now

Mapping and Directions to Lone Madrone click here

3. “Julie and Julia” pairs with Jada

You’ve finally got some extra time on your hands, so now is your chance to finally break out that tattered and stained copy of  “The Joy of Cooking,” the tome that taught Julia Child (and all of us) how to braise, simmer and broil. I mean, what better time to brush up on your Coq Au Vin? After you do, you’ll probably be inspired to sit down and watch this heartwarming flick from start to finish. By the end, you’ll learn to trust our gut and go for our dreams.

The joy of wine: Jada’s newly released 2019 “VIII VIII” Viognier and 2018 “1149” Rose are both great choices for all those fresh, spring meals you’re barbecuing in the backyard—the only “restaurant” you’ve been to in months. Plus, you’ll get $1 flat-rate shipping for orders of three bottles or more with promo code: JADA.

But it now

4. “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” pairs with Robert Hall

If a classic John Hughes movie can’t bring you a sense of good humor and happiness, I don’t know what will! Absolutely dripping with 80s nostalgia (the music! The hair! The clothes!), this movie just seems to get funnier with time. You’ll howl as our plucky protagonist gets into all sorts of trouble while playing hooky from high school. Gosh, remember doing that?

Life moves pretty fast, better sip this wine: Robert Hall’s 2017 Cavern Select Zinfandel is all about peppery playfulness and juicy blackberry indulgence. No hall pass required!

But it now

Mapping and Directions to Robert Hall Winery click here

5. “The First Wives Club” pairs with Michael Gill Cellars

An empowering and soulful film that taught us all to heal our heartache, this one’s for all the ladies (or gents) who might be on lockdown alone (or really wish they were). Raise a glass to comedic screen goddesses Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, Maggie Smith and Sarah Jessica Parker as they parse what it means to hold the title of “first” in a relationship that didn’t last.

Don’t get mad, get everything (and this bottle): Michael Gill Cellars 2018 Counoise will make you feel absolutely rich, darling. In fact, this luxurious wine recently won double gold and best of varietal from Wine Spectator and a 100 point score. He’s a keeper!

Buy it now : Contact the winery at 805-239-1668 for more information on purchasing bottles during Covid-19.

Where the cows and winemakers roam: Aside from family, there’s few things in life Laird and Lisa Foshay would say they care more about than making top-notch wine. One of those things, however, is obvious: The land where that impeccable wine is grown. Rangeland Wines grew from a love of Paso terroir as well as a passion for the dirty, difficult and rewarding business that is ranch life. Laird, a hands-on wine grower, can be found working in the vineyard each day, checking on the grapes or fixing a downed fence. A great chef and lover of hiking and the outdoors, Lisa spearheaded the winery’s estate meat program. Order up a box of lovingly raised Angus beef (where’s the beef? here!) and a case of bold red wine today (we recommend the 2015 Watershed, a Bordeaux blend and perennial favorite). Not only will you avoid the chaos of the grocery store—you’ll also know you’re helping a real life ranching family do what it does best.

2. Centuries in the making – Dubost Ranch Winery

One for the history books: If preserving a family heritage through wine seems a little odd, you’ve never met the Dubost Family. Descendants of French immigrants who arrived in the U.S. in  the late 1800s, the blacksmithing family eventually landed in Paso Robles’ scenic Adelaida District, which was then populated by many miners and homesteaders. Aside from ranching, the Dubosts also operated the general store, post office and dance hall. The wines you’ll find growing at the 320-acre Dubost Ranch homestead  are a direct reflection of their dedication to the land. Generations of farming this soil and a respect for all facets of the growing process have created iconic, authentic wines that stand the test of time. Try the winery’s famous 2016 Homestead Red blend and you, too, can take a small sip of this larger-than-life winemaking legacy and swoon over their award winning wines.

3. Old fashioned finesse – Dover Canyon Winery

Quality is forever: Doing it “the old fashioned way” is the only way at Dover Canyon Winery. Located on Vineyard Drive in the northwest quadrant of the Paso Robles appellation, owner/winemaker Dan Panico has long believed that the strip of calcareous soil located along Vineyard Drive is optimum for growing incredible zinfandel. Turns out, he was absolutely right! At Dover Canyon, vines are hand-pruned and dry farmed (because great wine, like anything else worthwhile in life, doesn’t come easy). Similarly, the syrah vines are stress-irrigated for concentrated flavor that really pops in the glass. Order up any of Panico’s juicy, vibrant reds—like the winery’s 2016 Primitivo—which shows flavors of wild strawberry and crisp cherry—and you’ll understand just how blood, sweat and toil tastes.

4. Locally delicious – Wines of the West

Shop local without leaving home: What if you could support family-owned local Paso Robles vineyards without leaving the couch? Head over to Wines of the West and you’ll be able to do just that. Nestled off Highway 46 West,  the Wines of the West roadhouse and tasting room is a unique hideout for folks looking for wine variety off the beaten path. So you can’t check out these digs in person, but you can purchase their wines and have your own hoedown at home. Click “buy” and enjoy a bevvy of Paso Robles AVA producers, including Purple Cowboy, Clayhouse Wines, Alloy and If You See Kay.

5 Paso Robles Wines to Pair with Your Covid-19 Kitchen Routine

As the stay-at-home order continues, many of us are taking to our gardens, our kitchens (and, for the Spring Cleaners among us, our closets). Yes, we’re rolling up our sleeves and DIYing our way through this strange, difficult time. Whether you’ve been donning baking gloves, picking up the pruning sheers or welding a spray bottle of cleaner, we can bet you’re learning the ins and outs of making your own everything, especially food. We’ve got 5 nifty pairings to add to your new self-reliant cooking “routine.” Yes, we’re using that word pretty light right about now!

1. Stress Baking Sourdough?

Loafing around never looked so hip. Who knew sourdough starter would become such a “thing” in 2020? A quick scroll through Instagram these days reveals loaves and slices galore. If you’ve fallen hard for this new bread baking craze, you know exactly how satisfying (and addictive) it can be to go carb crazy. But what to do with all those leftover sourdough heels? Take our advice: Make killer croutons and toss with whatever greens you’ve got left. If you don’t have a ton of fresh protein around, don’t fret: Try this smoked sardine caesar salad with pan croutons recipe with or without salami. I mean, who doesn’t have a dusty can of sardines in the pantry tucked away just in case of this sort of crisis? Pair with a fresh white, like Brecon Estate’s seafood-friendly 2018 Albariño, which features elegant white peach and nectarine fruit nuances on the nose.

Order now – Never before offered, 1c SHIPPING on ANY Brecon Wine purchase 4 bottles or more! Starts April 1st- (No Joke!) Good through April 30, 2020.

Mapping and Directions to Brecon Estate click here

2. Comfort Craving Banana Bread?

I mean, who’s sweet tooth isn’t out of control right now? Yes, banana bread—the stuff of happy visits with grandma—is all the rage among millennials (and those who follow them on social media). Not only is this easy-to-make treat delectable for breakfast or a midday snack (especially when toasted and spread with a bit of butter) but banana bread also serves as a great way to up-cycle those deeply speckled, brown (OK, almost black) overripe bananas. This recipe indeed calls for bananas that are looking a tad worse for wear. We swear, it just makes the banana flavor that much more decadent! Triple the recipe and freeze some for a rainy day or gobble it down now paired with an acid-driven white. We like Kiamie Wines 2018 White Kuvee, which boasts a slightly creamy mouthfeel and smooth finish. Delish!

Order now – Call the Tasting Room for $1 Shipping or to Pick Up your Order! Offer will expire soon.

3. Simmering Stock?

Look at you, so resourceful! Long gone are the days of picking up a quick quart of chicken broth on the way home from work. With less trips to the supermarket in our future, we’re making our own stock (and it’s so incredibly delicious)! Simply freeze leftover ribs, chicken carcasses—even the eye of that long gone steak—and keep in a ziplock bag till you’re ready to boil. Toss in carrot tops, leftover shards of onion and those sad, wilted stalks of celery, too. Waste not, want not. Now you’re halfway to a sumptuous, comforting broth! Use your stock to braise chicken, add flavor to rice, make yummy gravy or create from scratch stews and soups. Pair this succulent braised chicken recipe with Cass Winery’s 2018 Grenache, brimming with dried wild flower and baking spice goodness. Hey, you earned it!

Order now – 10% off wine purchases and $10 shipping. Offer ends soon.

Mapping and Directions to Cass Winery click here

4. Casserole Crazy?

Calling Betty Crocker, she wants her recipe back. Even if you’ve never worn a frilly apron in your life, our guess is you’ve been taking a seriously hard look at every housewife’s go-to potluck staple. Hearty, crowd-pleasing and forever freezable, these workhorses of your meal-plan will provide leftovers for weeks (and weeks, and weeks). Whether topped with bacon or filled with tuna, these are not your mother’s casseroles we’re suggesting. Want to create the equivalent of a happy hug from the inside? Try this mac and cheese recipe made totally grown-up by the addition of sophisticated truffle oil and rich Gruyere cheese. Pair with Robert Hall’s 2017 Cavern Select Cabernet Franc, with flavors of vanilla, bramble and spice. I’d like to see the PTA president do that!

Order now – Offering weekly wine and shipping specials! Call Robert Hall or join their email newsletter. Or follow them on Facebook and Instagram for their latest promotions! (805) 239-1616

5. Cocktail Curious?

Of course you are. 5 p.m. sure does come along quicker than usual, doesn’t it? Many of us (who are not heroic essential workers) are living in a perpetual version of groundhogs day. Zoom meetings can blur into each other and it’s been a while since any of us put on real pants, which creates a sense of “blah.” That’s why we feel it’s more important than ever to mark each part of your routine, from coffee and emails in the a.m. to an “afterwork” cocktail. In fact, many folks are hosting weekly cocktail hours with pals via zoom. Even if you’ve got a sparse bar, we bet you can whip up one of these drinks in a jiffy. Try Krobar Distillery’s Navy Strength Rum with fresh lime juice (just make sure to keep those pours in check—this is one surprisingly smooth, sailor approved libation).

Order now – shipping and curbside service available. For a limited time 80 proof alcohol pocket hand sanitizer free with each purchase.

BONUS! Cinco de Mayo Frozen Margaritas? Olé!

We imagine that right about now, you are craving something way different and exhilarating to help buoy your spirits and virtually share with friends. Local Paso Robles master gelatier, Leo Leo Gelato, to the rescue! You don’t have to wait for Cinco de Mayo to imbibe in these refreshing DIY tequila drinks. Simply mix 2 ounces of tequila with one of their ingenious sorbet flavors and blend away…salted glass rims? Yes, please!

Without question, these Cinco de Mayo influenced favors (that you can purchase by the pint), will put an extra cha-cha-cha in your step: Pineapple and Charred Jalapeño Sorbet,Strawberry Lime Sorbet,Blood Orange and Charred Serrano Pepper Sorbet, and ☻Spicy Mango Sorbet.

Throw in a piñata, a bowl of guac and chips for a festive Zoom session with friends. (We hear that Facebook has launched a FREE, NEW Messenger Room Service that does NOT have time limits!)

We love to buy from local businesses, and Leo Leo Gelato is one of many that we support wholeheartedly. We know that you too will relish these satisfying, new takes on frozen margaritas.

Order now – Curbside service in San Luis Obispo Country only available Thursday – Saturdays 3pm – 6pm.

5 Paso Wine Tasting Rooms to Virtually Fall in Love With Now

A “LOL” from your best friend falls flat when compared to a real life belly laugh, a virtual hug from your grandma doesn’t hold the same warmth, and virtual reality—as fantastical as it can be—is no substitute for real reality. But what about a virtual tour of beautiful Paso Robles Wine Country?

When you can effortlessly twirl through 360-degree views, e-stroll past lush vineyards and even sample Paso’s famously flavorful wine (delivered to your door, of course), I mean—hey! We could get used to this. See why the New York Times recently named Paso Robles Wine Country as a must-see on its “52 Places to Virtually Go” list. Skeptical? Well, why don’t you be the judge?

1. Free the bear at Oso Libre

Wild at heart: Oso Libre, or “Free Bear” Ranch is an homage to the owners’ blended family names and the spirit of early California pioneers who came before. Known for artisan estate wines—including small lot Bordeaux and Rhone-style blends, cabernet sauvignon, claret and dessert wine—the welcoming tasting room is modern and sleek with a sunny covered patio. Virtually explore the pastoral grounds, which include the vineyard, grazing fields and rustic barn area. When we say “rustic” it’s the real deal here: Cattle roam here, meaning you can even order premium quality, estate grown Angus beef from the tasting room! This is what we refer to as “Paso’s where cowboy country meets wine country.”

2. Lounge if you like at Parrish Family Vineyard

Where everyone knows your name: Known as a plush hangout for creative food and wine pairings, Parrish Family Vineyard should be on your wine tasting radar (even if you can’t taste or dine there at the moment). Led by the Parrish family and its beloved patriarch, winemaker David Parrish, the winery is all about serving up stellar sustainably grown Bordeaux varietals grown on three estate vineyards (Adelaida District, Templeton and Creston). Got a WIFI connection? Tour the Pinterest-worthy tasting room, which feels a lot like a lounge, living room and cozy cafe all rolled into one. Note: when the tasting room does reopen, you’ll want to  reserve a date for brunch and a real life vineyard tour. For now, you can dream.

3. Life’s just peachy at Peachy Canyon Winery

One for the history books: Zinfandel lovers know the name “Peachy Canyon,” and for good reason. This family owned and operated winery founded by Doug and Nancy Beckett way back in 1988 is a truly iconic locale for Paso’s heritage grape. Order a few bottles of Peachy Canyon Wine, known not just zinfandel but also fantastic Bordeaux-style blends, and you’ll taste the true terroir of classic Paso Robles in a glass. A virtual spin around the time honored tasting room—adorned with wood and white trim—reveals a warm and joyful oasis surrounded by sweeping estate vines. Bet you’d like to linger a while, right? When the lockdown lifts, snag a room at the Vineyard Cottage, complete with panoramic views, barbecue and a full kitchen. We’ll be glad to see Zoom hangouts go by the wayside, too.

4. Step into a storybook at Sculpterra

Where imagination swirls: There is just something so magical and surreal about Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden (I guess you could say it’s right there in the name). Fine art and fine wine await visitors, both IRL and virtual. Sculpterra’s diverse varietals—including Rhone and Bordeaux-style wines, fresh whites and dessert offerings—will surprise and delight you, whether you taste a bottle paired with your home-cooked dinner or on a lounge chair in your own backyard. But wait, there’s more: Click around the virtual tour and keep an eye out for the massive fish, cat or elephant roaming the manicured lawn. Wow, right? With lots of stone, wood and natural light, the ample tasting room itself feels a little like a storybook manor from another time. Here’s your chance to step into a new realm.

5. Crown yourself at Tooth and Nail

Treat yourself: At Tooth and Nail Winery, everyone deserves the royal treatment. “The first castle on the right” is easier to storm now, more than ever, thanks to the internet. During your virtual tour, experience a different side of Paso Robles, where gothic chandeliers and regal red velvet curtains meet interesting wines and live music. Proudly pouring Rabble, Tooth & Nail, Stasis and Amor Fati, the winery is known for serving up everything from killer chardonnay and crisp pinot gris to bold tempranillo and Bordeaux-style blends. The castle itself is a painting for the senses: Feast your eyes on this unconventional estate, which begins with a watery mote, moves into the luxurious tasting room and soars all the way up to a lovely rooftop view of surrounding vineyards. Survey your kingdom (or queendom). All of this is yours…for the moment.

Virtual Escape to these Paso Robles Wine Tasting Rooms Now

Cabin fever is a harsh mistress, eh? If your solo daily dog walk or weekly socially-distanced bicycle ride to the park isn’t quite enough to cut your craving for adventure, why not take a virtual tour outside your homebound routine? In fact, the New York Times recently named Paso Robles Wine Country as a must-see on its “52 Places to Virtually Go” List.

Alongside such breathtaking wonders as Washington, D.C.’s  cherry blossoms, Tokyo’s bustling street markets and Egypt’s pyramids, you’ll find virtual tours of Paso Robles Wine Country tasting rooms (courtesy of this humble website, we might add). Want to explore the land of rolling green vineyards and friendly wine tasting rooms for yourself? The wait ends now. Here are 5 virtual tasting room tours to keep you on your toes—even if you haven’t changed out of your slippers in a few days.

1. Brecon Estate

Boutique beauty: Nestled in the westside hills of Paso Robles (so green right now), Brecon Estate is ground zero for a truly handcrafted boutique wine experience. You may not be able to greet Welsh Winemaker Damian Grindley (who has crafted some of the most highly awarded wines across the United States, Australia, and Europe) yourself, but you can tour the grounds with a virtual tour. “Stroll” through the modern tasting room before stepping out onto a sunny deck affording vibrant vineyard views. You can almost hear the birds chirping!

2. Chronic Cellars

Laid back hangout: Paso Robles winemakers and avid surfers Jake and Josh Beckett know how to have a good time while making fine wine. “the chronic,” roughly translated by the brothers, means: “the good stuff.” Oh, yes, this wine is good stuff, indeed! Raised in the heart of wine country, the guys aimed at creating an elevated wine brand that didn’t harsh the mellow of Central Coast living. Check out the fun-loving tasting room for yourself: tour the chill, no-frills bar and take note of the corn hole and lawn games out back. Sure feels good to “stretch” your legs, doesn’t it?

3. Eberle Winery

Become a cave explorer: Known as a winemaking pioneer of Paso Robles Wine Country, Gary Eberle made history with his 1979 Eberle Cabernet Sauvignon. Now, experience the legendary tasting room without leaving your kitchen table. A cozy, wood-paneled bar and a vast deck for mingling make this tasting room a picturesque Paso stop. The real excitement comes when you click along a dimly lit underground path through Eberle’s iconic wine caves. Follow the barrels and count the days until you can traverse the 16,000 square foot subterranean space in real life. Yes, they do host parties down there and you are invited!

4. Hearst Ranch Winery

Keys to the castle: Sound agricultural practices, impeccable winemaking and the philanthropic involvement of Steve Hearst and Jim Saunders have come together to create a truly special wine offering emblazoned with a world famous name (yes, we’re talking about that Hearst). With fruit sourced from some of the finest vineyards on the Central Coast, Heart Ranch aims to create a legacy of quality synonymous with the Hearst tradition. With two tasting rooms—one near Hearst Castle in San Simeon; the other in Paso Robles—there’s no excuse not to take a peek. Point your mouse toward the latter, which features an impressive barrel room and an expansive, sun dappled veranda.

5. JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery

Go gourmet: JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery broke ground on their very first vineyard back in 1981 with a mission to make world-class Bordeaux-style blends. Since then, this historic winery has expanded with a restaurant and inn. Want to dream about your next romantic vacay? It’s only a click away! Take in stunning vineyard views from their revamped tasting room in the heart of Paso’s Adelaida District AVA. Extra credit: Heighten your virtual tour experience with a DIY cheese plate. Sure, it won’t be as fancy as the one a JUSTIN tasting room attendant would whip up, but hey. We’re all doing the best we can.

6. Bonus – Other Virtual Paso Escapes

Restaurants and Hotels

The virtual fun doesn’t have to stop at wine tasting rooms. Check out these awesome 350-degree views of Paso Robles Restaurants and Hotels.

Located in the foodie mecca of downtown Paso Robles, Fish Gaucho is a purveyor of California Mexican food and local wine, beer and cocktails. Expect a fresh, healthy twist on traditional Mexican food paired with latin inspired music and a vast tequila list. See for yourself with a virtual tour (and imagine the smells that would be sizzling in the kitchen).

5 Morale Boosting Paso Robles Reds to Order Now

See all of the incredible COVID-19 shipping deals, bottle/case discounts and offers.

During WWII, when the entire country focused on the war effort and folks began growing their backyard victory gardens, sales of red lipstick went through the roof. Why? Seeing a flash of vibrant red served as a simple and affordable morale boost, my dear! In Paso Robles Wine Country, we also yearn for a flash of red during dark times. This is an uncertain period in our nation’s history and we’re all doing our part to flatten the curve of COVID-19.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t also take pleasure in the small pleasures in life (such as a nice home cooked meal, a cozy bath or a glass of fine wine). Right now, we will rely more than ever on the comfort of our friends, the support of our community and—as always—brash, bold and beautiful Paso Robles wine.

1. Dance with Yourself – Anarchy Wine Co.

Fight for your right to party (within the safe confines of your own home). Raise a glass of Anarchy Wine Co.’s 2017 ZSM Blend, a wild mix of 37% zinfandel, 35% mourvedre and 28% syrah and toast to better days. This wine is rich and lively, exemplifying Paso’s pioneering can-do spirit that won DOUBLE GOLD in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Want to join in on the dance? Anarchy Wines is now offering a “Dancing with Myself Special” perfect for spicing up your self isolation mood. Take 5% off bottles of their 2017 Anarchy ZSM (first bottle on their wine lineup with a yellow A inside a circle on the bottle) and pay just $1 shipping when you order three bottles or more (mix and match bottles freely, but be aware that the 5% discount applies solely to the ZSM). Use promo code “Dancing5” at checkout and select delivery or curbside pickup (tasting room open 11am-4pm Monday through Friday). Billy Idol would approve of this wine (and your dance moves).

2. Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy – Wines of the West

Where have all the cowboys gone? Why, to the Wines of the West tasting room, of course! While this inviting dog-friendly tasting room might be closed for the time being, you can still order up a tall dark bottle or two for your next backyard grill session. A luxurious Bordeaux blend, their 2017 Purple Cowboy blend celebrates Paso Robles’ juicy fruit forward style and preclusion for drinkable, supper-friendly flavors. Crafted with 62% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot, 17% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot, expect a nose of ripe mulberry and cinnamon and an opulent, round mouthfeel that hugs your mouth like well worn leather. Right now, you’ll pay just 1 cent shipping when you buy a dozen bottles or more (mix and match to your heart’s delight, cowpoke).

3. Christmas in Springtime – Rio Seco Vineyard and Winery

We could all use some warm and fuzzy Christmas vibes right now, don’t you think? Thankfully, Rio Seco Vineyard and Winery is making us all a little jollier with a festive new deal that won’t poke your eye out. Order an incredible case of red for $150 (That’s 60% off) and treat yourself to a gift that’ll age well for years to come. Designed to bring you a bit of cheer during these isolating times, the winery decided to unleash its extremely popular Christmas sale early. Why wait until December, right? Enjoy a case of luscious cabernet sauvignon, a case of distinctive cabernet franc (or a mix of both) and call it a miracle. No, this is no April Fool’s prank.

Dark, ripe, sexy and full-bodied, grab at least three bottles of this wine (or another wine you fancy) and get $1 UPS Ground Shipping. Host a Virtual Paso Robles Wine Happy Hour

For the safety of all, we’re staying inside. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still grab a drink with friends. Yes, the Internet is a magical thing, indeed! During tough times, all social interactions—via phone call or video chat—take on a whole new meaning. We could all reserve a little extra space each week to let our hair down, have a laugh and enjoy the latest Paso Robles wines. Here’s how you can host your own virtual happy hour from the safety of your own abode!

1. Invite your friends

From WhatsApp and FaceTime to Zoom and Google Hangouts, there’s a plethora of ways to gather your favorite people on your next video call. Schedule a date and time that works for your friend group, then stick to the commitment. Who knows—this could become a weekly thing! Just be warned: The more people you invite, the more out of hand the conversation is likely to get. No, that’s not a bad thing by any means, but you should let your more introverted pals know beforehand what kind of happy hour they’re getting into. Whether you prefer a small group of two or three people or a bigger crowd, make sure you let your friends know what they’re in for before you hit that “invite” button.

2. Prepare your space

Clear off the coffee or dining room table and flip on a few extra lamps (good lighting on your face is key). Assemble a snack plate or order takeout from your favorite Paso Robles restaurants and wineries (order in from these awesome eateries and tasting rooms here). Make sure you have your wine or spirits glass, ice, water, napkins and everything else you might need at arm’s reach (this way, you aren’t constantly leaving the video feed while you and your friend are in the middle of a riveting conversation). Why not throw on a fun outfit too, just to lighten the mood? It is a party, after all.

3. Gather your bottles

It’s not as easy as it once was to pick up new wines and spirits. No worries! Purveyors in Paso Robles are ensuring that you get the new vintage despite the current circumstances. Love a good cocktail? Forager Spirits offers up curbside pickup each Saturday from 3-5p.m. (just order by phone or email before you swing by). Even better, you’ll get a handy two ounce bottle of hand sanitizer with your order! Want to see all the wineries and distilleries offering curbside pickup at the moment? See here.

4. Compare notes

Sure, a general happy hour is fun, but self-proclaimed wine geeks will enjoy the added stimulation of a more structured experience (especially since we aren’t able to get out to local tasting rooms to gab with fellow cork dorks). Hosting a virtual wine tasting isn’t as difficult as it sounds! There is no right or wrong way to do it. Encourage your friends to share details about the wine or spirits they’re enjoying (even if you’re all drinking something totally different). Create a few prompts before you start, including questions about bouquet, mouthfeel and finish. Compare, contrast, cheers.

5. Get discounts

Wine cellar looking a little sparse? Right now, you can take advantage of some amazing Paso Robles wine discounts that will truly boost your virtual happy hour experience.. Tooth and Nail Winery is offering free shipping on any purchase of three bottles or more, Kiamie Wine Cellars and ONX Wines offers $1 shipping, and Oso Libre and Austin Hope & Treana Tasting Cellar will only charge you a mere penny when you order four and three bottles or more, respectively (see websites for all details). You’ll also want to check out Cass Winery’s current discount: 10% off wine purchases and $10 shipping, including their newly released 2019 Oasis Rose, Marsanne, Roussane, Grenache and Mourvedre. You’ll also get 30% off wine purchases for club members and 10% off pick-up orders (Use code Cabinfever). Lusso DellaTerra is offering 20% off all wine purchases with code 20WINE and wine club members can enjoy 30% off with code 30WINE. Mix and match four wines for $69 while supplies last (including their Chardonnay 2017, Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Zinfandel 2015 and Avanzi).

6. Remember the dessert!

We could all use a little self-pampering about now. Leo Leo Gelato, master gelatier to the rescue! They are offering a 25% discount on their pints to add an affordable luxury to your daily routine, guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Gelato is lower in fat than ice cream, yet creamier and more flavorful. Their gorgeous sorbettos are also made in the traditional Italian way, which means that only fruit, water, and egg whites are used, making it a zero fat and zero sugar option! Grazie to Italian ingenuity, we can have our cake and eat it too, without feeling guilty. Curbside pickup or delivery is available. Email order@leoleogelato.com

GELATO FLAVORS: Chocolate, Cookies and Cream, Pistachio, Sea Salt Caramel, Strawberry White Chocolate, Vanilla (lower in fat than ice cream!)

SORBET FLAVORS: Strawberry Sorbet, Mango Sorbet (made with fruit, water, and egg whites NO SUGAR ADDED, making it a healthy, non-fat dessert)

How to Social Distance the Paso Wine Way

(Virtual Wine Tasting)

Right now, weddings are paused, festivals are on hold and all hot dates have been put on a massive block of ice. Social distancing is frustrating at best, downright heartbreaking at worst. Alas, staying inside doesn’t have to mean giving up the pleasure of enjoying new Paso Robles wine offerings.

In fact, these ingenious Paso Robles tasting rooms have banded together to ensure you can still sip, swirl and smile, all without leaving your couch. During these trying times, a simple joy can go a very long way to boost morale! Plus, you’ll feel good knowing you’re giving back to the local wine industry, which has been hit hard as of late.

1. Bring the Tasting Room to You

We truly have arrived in the “future,” my friends. Virtual tours and tastings have been around for a while, but they’ve soared in popularity lately, as you can surely understand. Book your own virtual wine tasting by clicking over to Monochrome Wines, the only Paso Robles tasting room focusing exclusively on white varietals. Parrish Family Vineyard (pictured) will host their own virtual tasting each Friday at 5 p.m. (after you are officially done working from home, of course). Join David Parrish and certified sommelier Vanessa Igel for a drink, a fun live chat and a pairing—plus, get 50% off shipping with code SHIP, 10% off chardonnay and zinfandel with code TEN, and grab Sauvignon Blanc bottles for just $16 each. And Sextant Wines just hosted their first virtual wine tasting Tuesday evening which was attended by over 100 people! There will be more to follow starting April 2 with a newly featured 3-bottle pack that you can order online.

Feeling cooped up around the house? Many Paso Robles Wineries boast their own virtual tours. Eberle Winery offers up a vivid virtual tour of its breathtaking grounds (pictured) so that you can have a moment of wine country sun (even if it’s cloudy outside). Plus, you’ll also get free ground shipping with the purchase of four bottles or more (include promo code HOME20 at check-out). Note: This special offer cannot be combined with other promotions and flat rate shipping excludes Hawaii and Alaska or any prohibited states. Excludes overnight and 2-day shipping. You can also enjoy Parrish Family Vineyard’s stunning virtual tour including views of their vineyards.

2. Order Online (and Reap the Rewards)

Everything is in upheaval right now, but there is one small silver lining: There’s never been a better time to save on wine shipping costs. Paso Robles wineries are sweetening the deal for folks who order online right now. Four Lanterns Winery is offering free shipping on purchases of six bottles or more (and you can also get free delivery for homebound folks in Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero). Just contact jackie@fourlanternswinery.com. Allegretto Wines is taking 50% off shipping through March 31, and Hoyt Family Vineyards will give 20% off wines for non-club members and 30% off for non-members (good through April 1). Paix Sur Terre Winery will offer $1 shipping on all orders and 10% off all wine purchases with promo code DEAL (offer good till March 31). Sculpterra Winery (pictured) is also jumping on the bandwagon with a generous free shipping offer to all California residents through March 31 with a minimum order of two bottles (36 max), plus 20% off gift cards and curbside pickup available for the locals. If your wine cellar—or wine cabinet, shelf, or closet—is looking a bit bare—now is the time to stock up and save. (Sculpterra also has a virtual tour!)

3. Have a Wine Festival of One

Sadly, the anticipated Vintage Paso: Zinfandel Weekend was only one of many great events canceled over the past week or so. Sure, it’s disappointing—but did you know you can bring the festival to you? Sample Paso’s heritage varietal with a special offer from Pelletiere Estate Vineyard and Winery (pictured). All zinfandel shipments to California residents through March 31 are 25% off. Plus, get $10 flat rate shipping (for six bottles; use code Vintage6) or 30% off with $5 flat rate shipping on 12 bottles; use code vintage12. Harmony Cellars is also carrying on the ZinFest tradition, sans the actual festival. Save 10% off zinfandel through April 1 and take advantage of free shipping on wine orders of six or twelve bottles (California residents only. Call 805-927-1652 to order). Allow wine fest for one to commence!
