Guides, Things To Do

Which Paso Robles Wine Trail Will You Explore First?

  • February 13, 2024
  • By Aidan Simpson
Discover how these Paso Robles wine trails can be your guide to effortlessly explore this rich region.

Paso Robles wine country offers seven distinct wine trails. Each wine trail leads to a selection of vineyards and tasting rooms that showcase the region’s winemaking excellence. With these trails you can enjoy a day’s worth of tastings within a singular, captivating locale. Cutting out the long drives between vineyards gives you more time to really enjoy each tasting room and experience.

Paso Robles, situated halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, benefits from a coastal influence that allows for a wide temperature variation, conducive to a long grape growing season. From the robust flavors of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to the delicate nuances of Grenache Blanc and Viognier, the area’s wine offerings are as varied as the unique and intimate wine tasting experiences you’ll find along the way.

Don’t know where to begin? Let’s start in the downtown area, where more than 20 tasting rooms are easily accessible.

Wine Trails in Paso Robles

Downtown Wineries

Step into the heart of Paso Robles with a visit to its historic and inviting downtown, a hub where the variety of winery tasting rooms offers a window into the region’s diverse viticulture. In this charming setting, it’s not uncommon to be welcomed by the winery owners themselves, whose passion and enthusiasm for their craft are as infectious as they are enlightening. Many downtown tasting rooms extend their hours until 6 or 7 pm, allowing you the leisure of savoring just one more taste of Paso’s finest before the evening’s culinary adventures begin.

Hoyt Family Vineyards reflects downtown’s keen focus on small production, high quality boutique wineries. Their downtown tasting room is ready to welcome walk-ins. Also, dive into the art of garagiste winemaking at Hayseed & Housdon. Check out all the downtown tasting rooms here.

Adelaida Road

Adelaida Road in West Paso Robles is lined with picturesque wineries nestled among the rolling hills. For a unique adventure, embark on a jeep tour through the vineyards at Halter Ranch, or enjoy panoramic views with a hilltop tasting at Adelaida Vineyard & Winery. Alta Colina offers an unforgettable sunset vineyard tasting, while Lone Madrone invites you to indulge in Burger Sundays. To delve into the region’s deep roots in Rhône wine heritage, a visit to Tablas Creek is essential. Each experience along Adelaida Road offers a distinctive way to explore Paso’s rich winemaking tradition.

Brecon Estate

Vineyard Drive

Vineyard Drive in Paso Robles is renowned not just for its iconic wineries but also for the innovative pioneers shaping the wine industry’s future. Among this wine trail, Brecon Estate stands out as a boutique winery tucked into the westside hills, celebrated for its small-batch, award-winning wines crafted by an internationally acclaimed winemaker. Each wine at Brecon tells a unique story, available exclusively at their tasting room and often selling out quickly due to their limited production and high demand.

Another gem on Vineyard Drive is Oso Libre, a winery that embodies the spirit of early California pioneers with its name meaning “Free Bear” in Spanish. Oso Libre is recognized for its artisan, award-winning estate wines produced in limited quantities. Commitment to sustainability is at the heart of their operation, with all vines SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certified, ensuring practices that prioritize habitat conservation, energy efficiency, water conservation, and human resources.

Exploring Vineyard Drive offers an intimate glimpse into Paso Robles’ wine culture. To fully experience Vineyard Drive, make sure to also visit Clos Soléne, Paix Sur Terre, and Dilecta, with Paix Sur Terre standing out for producing some of California’s most acclaimed white wines.

Highway 46 East

Driving East from downtown Paso explore some of the regions established wine offerings with visits to Eberle for its intriguing cave tours, Robert Hall for premium wine tastings and outdoor games, and Allegretto Wines for award-winning selections in their resort-based tasting room. Each venue offers a distinct experience reflecting the rich wine culture and history of the region.

Discover the rich history of Paso Robles with a visit to J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines’ tasting room, and enhance your journey with a cheese tasting and picnic essentials at Le Vigne Winery. Both spots are celebrated for their dedication to producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. View all the wineries on the 46 East wine trail.

Highway 46 West

Take the scenic route along Highway 46 West in Paso Robles to discover a collection of wineries each with its own unique charm. Four Lanterns Winery, established by Steve and Jackie Gleason in 2013, focuses on Rhône and Bordeaux-style wines, celebrating the terroir of their property. You’re likely to meet the owners themselves, showcasing their family-operated ethos.

Lone Madrone reflects the personality of winemaker Neil Collins, offering wines from dry-farmed vineyards that emphasize depth and character. Sextant Wines impresses with its Bordeaux blends and Rhône-style wines, acclaimed by wine enthusiasts and available for tasting in two locations, including their scenic estate on 46 West.

Treana Tasting Cellar, under Austin Hope, provides a vibrant atmosphere for sampling their award-winning wines, highlighting their dedication to artisan winemaking. This stretch of Highway 46 West offers a memorable wine-tasting experience steeped in family tradition and winemaking excellence. Lunch options await at Barton’s Kitchen Window at Grey Wolf Cellars or Niner Wine Estates for a more formal sit down meal.

Experience the diverse tasting options at Bovino Vineyards in the El Pomar AVA, offering everything from tranquil tastings in their distinct tasting room to adventurous 4-wheel vineyard tours. Chateau Margene beckons with its highly rated Paso Robles Cabernets and Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, providing a picturesque setting for a picnic.

Try Still Waters Vineyards for exquisite Bordeaux or Rhône blends, and Cass Vineyards and Wines invites you to enjoy lunch at the Cass Café, paired perfectly with their estate-grown Rhone and Bordeaux varietals.
