5 Paso Wineries Utilizing the Best Vineyards

What they say is true: Great wine starts in the vineyard! Taste any of Paso Robles Wine Country’s award-winning bottles and you’ll find a stellar plot of land to thank. With dozens of soil types and microclimates to choose from, Paso Robles winemakers can grow a plethora of delicious grape varieties (seriously, so many more than you can count on all your fingers and toes)!

With hot, dry conditions located inland perfect for growing robust blends, cooling coastal breezes to the west known to add balanced acidity, and a smattering of majestic mountaintop blocks ready to soak up the sun, you’ll find wines that are bold, restrained, sophisticated and overall just surprisingly good. In other words? Our wines tell the story of exactly where they were raised! Ready to explore Paso’s vibrant vineyards, one sip at a time? Pull on those boots and get ready to get your hands dirty. We’re celebrating five fabulous growing grounds!

Kiamie Cellars

Taste the rainbow: Looking for a wonderful, one-stop tasting experience that’ll give you a multi-vineyard education? A visit to Kiamie Cellars reveals layers of legendary Paso Robles terroir and a dazzling array of fine fruit. That’s because Kiame’s blends are sourced from the unique mountain-top vineyards of Westside Paso Robles (as it turns out, those stunning hills are as scenic to view at as they are delicious to sample). Working with a handful of premium wine grape growers in the Paso Robles appellation—including Starr Ranch, Halter Ranch Vineyard, Rolph Family Vineyard, Hearthstone Vineyard and La Vista Vineyard—this small batch boutique winery is able to showcase some of the most premium wine grapes on the Westside! Plus, all of Kiamie’s fruit comes from a two-mile radius of their charming Adelaida Road tasting room, making for a surprisingly localized experience. BONUS: Meet G.O.A.T. adorable, miniature goats that wander around the grounds for you to pet and snap fun shots with for your Instagram!

Brecon Estate

Home grown goodness: Sometimes you need not roam far from home to find your treasure. At Brecon Estate, their onsite vineyard—located adjacent to the winery along iconic Vineyard Drive—features sixteen acres of dry-farmed, old vine cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc that represents some of the first Bodeaux plantings in the Adelaida District! As if that weren’t impressive enough, Brecon also owns four acres of petit verdot (including a new clone of malbec from Cahors, the second planting of this clone in California), four acres of cabernet franc and tannat, and a number of hilltop sites hidden away with the Central Coast highlands. Founded by longtime cave explorers, the winery still believes in leaving the land better than you found it. As they like to say of their historic estate vineyard, “Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs.” After seeing those vines with our own two eyes, we enthusiastically agree!

Four Lanterns Winery

Paso passion: If you’ve ever dreamed of stopping off on Highway 46 West for a sunny picnic, Four Lanterns Winery should be on your itinerary. Known for its sprawling green lawn, rustic-yet-sophisticated tasting room and super fresh, top notch wines, you’ll experience a family vibe the moment you step food on the property. You’ll also notice the lush estate vineyards thriving all around! Yes, Four Lanterns knows a thing or two about farming lush views: Nestled on 35 acres in the Willow Creek AVA, this land is known for hot days, cool nights and soil studded with calcareous stone. It’s just a coincidence that these coveted growing grounds make for some breathtaking scenery, too (rent a cottage on the property to see for yourself)! Want to know what convinced these SoCal locals to pack it up and move to Paso? Simply ask your tasting attendant to try a Bordeaux offering sourced from “Jackie’s Vineyard,” in the Templeton Gap AVA. ‘Nuff said!

Harmony Cellars

A harmonious blend: Harmony Cellars might be perched along a stunning coastal hillside overlooking the quaint hamlet of Harmony, California, but that doesn’t mean its vineyards are visible from this famous viewpoint. In fact, a high magnesium content in the soil make for not-so suitable growing conditions (sad face). But fear not, dear friends! This situation suits winemaker Chuck just fine. Untethered by a single estate, he’s able to offer a diverse selection of wines, all of which are produced and bottled in Harmony for your sensory enjoyment. Head to the tasting room today and sample iconic wines sourced from stellar fruit grown all along the Central Coast from Monterey to Santa Margarita in the south. When paired with Harmony Cellars’ epic views, the whole package truly comes together. Some might say it’s a perfect blend.

Hoyt Family Vineyards

Land and sea: When Hoyt Family Vineyards Winemaker Carol Hoyt and her hubby Stephen first decided to leave Hollywood and move to somewhere a little more laid back, they were torn between buying a dream home by the beach or near a vineyard. Luckily for white wine lovers everywhere, the couple chose both: in 2001, they planted their first chardonnay vineyards in Malibu, the perfect place for cool climate grapes to ripen to perfect balance. Since then, the Hoyt family clan has focused on harvesting and producing all kinds of award-winning wines sourced from Malibu all the way up through the Central Coast. In fact, their Paso Robles-based vineyards are situated high on lovely hilltops overlooking the west side of the famed Willow Creek AVA. Try their offerings for yourself at their downtown Paso Robles tasting room and you’ll soon understand the power of surf, turf and tenacity.
