5 Enchanted Wine Gardens in Paso Robles Wine Country

It’s time to swap Zoom calls for birdsong, and chores for cheery Monarch butterflies. Fine wine, fragrant lavender and bountiful sunshine come out to play in Paso Robles Wine Country, home to dozens of vibrant outdoor tasting rooms. Allow the atmosphere to enchant and delight: Savor incredible wines while bathed in the unmatched beauty of the region. Perhaps you don’t believe in fairies anymore, but you might just believe in magic by the time you’ve explored these 5 ethereal wine country gardens.

Giants slumber at Sculpterra Winery

Tumble through the looking glass: The very word “enchanted” seems to perfectly sum up the lush, creative and truly impressive grounds at Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden in Paso Robles (pictured above too). Here, towering statues of spellbound animals, butterflies and otherworldly creatures guard well-groomed hedges and meandering pathways. Stroll along the grand green expanse, marveling at the works of art (both surrounding you and in your glass).

Enjoy: Bring your own picnic and sample the winery’s 2019 Sauvignon Blanc, famous for its enticing tropical nose and round, fruity palate. You may never wake from this dream—but why would you want to?

Explore: Tasting reservations and walk-ins welcome. Kids and dogs are also invited to enjoy in the landscape. Outside food permitted. Open 10am to 5pm daily.

Relax under the branches of a friendly oak tree and enjoy the quiet of this calm, outdoor oasis.

Enjoy: Refined red cherry fruit, cedar and mesmerizing savory notes make the winery’s 2019 Pinot Noir – Sta. Rita Hills the perfect sipper for an afternoon of sun-dappled pleasures.

It’s time to bask in the glory of your best staycation yet at Villa San Juliette!

5 Paso Wines that Pair Perfectly with Pizza

Pizza, pizza! Whether you prefer yours thin and wood-fired or caramelized and deep dish, you’ll never say no to one last tempting slice. Life is full of things to argue about (like whether pineapple does really belong on the toppings list), but we can all agree on one thing: pizza makes any night a party. Thankfully, Paso Robles Wine Country knows a thing or two about food-friendly wines. Try these deliciously juicy bottles paired with your favorite savory pie. Bring on the cheese!

1. Go deep with Villa San Juliette

Crispy caramelized edges and pillows of doughy goodness await fans of deep dish ‘za. But have you tried your fave Chicago-style slice paired with an epic cabernet sauvignon? Sure, a saucy square of deep dish may feel a little too pedestrian for a fancy red, but in Paso Robles we have an overarching philosophy: always drink the good stuff! Villa San-Juliette makes a ravishing cab perfect for washing down that chewy crust: their 2016 VSJ Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe, full bodied and imbued with the perfect amount of nutty spice. Deeply satisfying? Oh yeah.

2. Cali style with Iron Oaks

Not all pizzas are created equally. Next time you’re in the mood for a laid back barbecue chicken pizza topped with bacon, red onion and a creamy white sauce instead of traditional marinara, reach for a refreshing California white blend crafted with all the fun and none of the fussiness. Iron Oaks Winery knows a thing or two about shaking up expectations: Floral on the nose and brimming with lemon crème brûlée on the palate, Flipside is a clean-finishing white blend sure to take that side of ranch to a whole new level. And while you are at it pick up some of their exclusive grass fed beef that they raise locally!

3. Fire it up with Peachy Canyon

Charred toppings and a smoky crunch make those ever-popular wood-fired pies a little sexier than your traditional oven-toasted pizzas, don’t you think? If the scent of a well-stoked fire drives you wild, consider pairing your next sizzling hot slice with an equally bold zinfandel. Peachy Canyon’s award-winning 2017 D Block Zinfandel is intense, in a word. Savor all the sumptuousness of clove, tobacco and allspice paired with cedar and a punch of raspberry. That’s amore!

4. Italy, with love and Pelletiere

With lovingly blackened edges that redefine the word “burnt,” a special wheat flour (dubbed 00, for those in the know) and a simplistic-yet-elegant pairing of vine-ripened tomatoes and mozzarella di bufala cheese, Neapolitan pizza is a true Italian masterpiece you can actually gobble up. Why not buy a case of Pelletiere’s 2017 Tievoli—a super fruit forward and crowd pleasing blend of sangiovese and zinfandel—and know you’ve always got a bottle on hand? This pairing is truly a work of art, no matter how you slice it.

5. DIY yo’ slice with Eberle

The best part about homemade pizza? Well, besides the fact you can make it whenever you want and you’ll never tip a delivery driver—finally, you’re in the captain’s seat. Go with a pre-made gluten free crust or roll it out from scratch the way your grandma taught you; pile on the anchovies or just go crazy with the wild boar sausage. It’s up to you! When DIY is this delicious, pour yourself something fruity, with a twist. Eberle’s 2018 Syrah – Steinbeck Vineyard is packed with blueberry and blackberry pizazz plus a wallop of chocolate and espresso heft. Just don’t forget to set the timer.

6 Paso Robles Wineries with Restaurants

Wine and dine with a sit-down meal in Paso Robles Wine Country. No, we’re not talking about a traditional restaurant! With a year-round growing season and plenty of fresh produce and artisanal treats to savor, Paso Robles tasting rooms are catering to wine enthusiasts and foodies alike. If you’re seeking more than a simple cheese plate with your next wine tasting, you’re in luck. These 6 Paso Robles tasting rooms offer expertly paired culinary creations made to order.

1. Parrish Family Vineyard

Vibe: Warm, welcoming with vineyard views forever (pictured above)
Menu: New American foodies’ dream
Dine: Parrish Family Vineyard’s cozy lounge is perfect for taking in vineyard views, grabbing a shared plate with a group of friends or chowing down on a thick steak, made just the way you like it. Be sure to try the house-made sourdough bread made with yeast cultivated from the estate vineyard grapes, always a crowd favorite.
Why we love it: Parrish Family Vineyard boasts deep ties to the area dating back 70 years. That reverence for the land, paired with incredible Bordeaux wines, sharable plates, paired tasting flights and heavenly brunch offerings—makes for a dining experience that feels both down home and high brow.
Standout dishes: Mussels on the half shell paired with 2017 Sauvignon Blanc; Peek-aboo Wagyu beef paired with 2016 Silken blend.
Details: Serving food Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sunday Brunch 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

2. JUSTIN

Vibe: Intimate and innovative

Lunch, brunch and dinner are all works of art—especially when paired with an award-winning wine list, flights, and special tasting experiences. If you want to understand the “how” and “why” behind the pairing, this is the place for you. Take notes!
Why we love it: You can taste all of JUSTIN’s renowned wines (especially the Cabernet Sauvignon blends the winery has become known worldwide for) while noshing on the freshest produce in an intimate dinning room. Everything is super seasonal, sensational, and iconically Paso Robles.

3. Villa San Juliette

Vibe: Sophisticated Villa
Menu: Italian inspired
Dine: Whether you sit in the well appointed tasting room of Villa San Juliette or sprawl out on the sun dappled patio, you’ll feel like you’re on a European vacation far, far away. Allow the winery to pair a diverse wine selection with hand-crafted plates to round out the fantasy.
Why we love it: Villa San Juliette’s palace-like tasting room is truly opulent, and the food is perhaps the crowning jewel (well, after the wine, of course). The owners, lifelong friends and producers of the hit television show, American Idol, aimed to create a lavish oasis for their luxurious Bordeaux wines. The result is a sensory experience that begins at first sip and lingers long after your meal is over.
Standout dishes: Chicken Parmesan panini with fresh basil and salad; crab cakes with house made remoulade and lemon paired with the winery’s fresh Sauvignon Blanc.
Details: Open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday.

4. Opolo

Vibe: Laid back luxury
Menu: Wood-fired pizza
Dine: At Opolo, “food friendly” is taken to a whole new level. Choose from a dazzling array of pizzas, including Italian Sausage and Margherita, fresh salads, and savory sausage plates paired with fantastic food-loving wines. Known for Bordeaux and Italian wines—including an array of bold blends—you’ll also find Rhone whites, sparkling offers and even grappa made in-house. Hope you like a bit of everything.
Why we love it: There’s nothing like sharing a gourmet wood-fired ‘za with friends. Taste from a lineup of wines and spirits before or after your meal, or get a bottle and enjoy your food. We certainly recommend the latter.
Standout dishes: Pizza Bueno with caramelized onions, mushrooms and grilled chicken over seasoned white sauce, mozzarella and parmesan cheese; Tri Kobasice plate with three house-made sausages and dipping sauce served with seasonal vegetables, cheese and focaccia. Pair with any of the winery’s red offerings, especially their famous Mountain Zinfandel.
Details: Serving food from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

5. Cello at Allegretto Vineyard Resort

Vibe: Wine Country Resort
Menu: Mediterranean seasonal
Dine: Check in to flavor. Cello at Allegretto Vineyard Resort is where food, friends and flavors blend into perfect harmony. Executive Chef Justin Picard shows off his talent for marrying domestic and international flavor profiles in an array of dishes paired with local and house made wines. Isn’t it nice when you don’t have to leave the hotel for spa services, wine tasting and fabulous food?
Why we love it: Cello is about fresh ingredients and artisan cookery, celebrating farmers, ranchers, and fisherman or the region. Sip on house made red or white wine, or grab a cocktail made with local spirits. What more could you want? If you said “a massage,” you are in luck! The resort has that, too.
Standout dishes: Raw Vegan Zucchini Spaghettini with foraged greens, fresh herbs, sweet onion broth, fennel, cherry tomato and house made hummus; oak pit grilled Angus beef filet mignon with garlic smashed Yukon Gold potato, red wine demi-glace and horseradish marscapone. Enjoy either with a local wine flight or house made offerings.
Details: Breakfast served from 7:30 to 11 a.m.; Lunch served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Dinner served Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

6. Cass Winery

Vibe: Breezy and casual
Menu: Central Coast cool
Dine: Opt to taste up at the bar or sit on the winery’s the shaded veranda—your choice. This chill tasting room offers table-side wine offerings while you dine, which is which is especially helpful when you’re busy savoring all that delicious food.
Why we love it: You can grab a large crowd and head out to Cass for a lunch that lasts for hours (in fact, we say you should plan on it). The view is pastoral with a capital “P,” featuring rolling vineyards, oak trees, and blue skies. Happy wine attendants are on hand to bring you tastes of award winning Rhone and Bordeaux wines (and yes, there’s locally made Leo Leo Gelato for dessert).
Standout dishes: The Figgy Piggy sandwich with Speck Prosciutto and Prosciutto Cotto, fig jam, whipped goat cheese and French Baguette; Benny Burger with estate-raised gras fed beef, house cured bacon, Hook’s Paradise bleu cheese, horseradish aioli, pickled onions and Edna’s Bakery seeded brioche bun (add a Loo Loo Farm fried organic duck egg if you’re feeling frisky). Pair with a tasting flight of your choosing.

5 Paso Robles Wine Spring Flings You Won’t Want to Miss

Tear up the to do list and grab your favorite friends—it’s time for a sunny trip to Paso Robles Wine Country! You’ve all been talking about getting away. Now, put your money where your mouth is before the season is gone. Springtime is the right time for incredible culinary events, unique winemaker dinners and once-in-a-lifetime tasting experiences (with a live band, great barbecue, awesome ambiance, or all of the above). Whether you seek a swanky multi-course meal by the sea or just a night under the stars two-stepping to a great live band, Paso Robles Wine Country is here to put that spring back in your step. That garage needing reorganization can wait.

1.  Dance Like No One’s Watching at Tooth and Nail

Will you do us this honor? Sometimes a chill concert is just what the doctor ordered. De-stress and rejoice in that laid-back Paso Robles vibe at Tooth and Nail Winery, which hosts free concerts each Friday night from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and each Sunday night from 1-4 p.m. Country artist Michael D. Keeney will take the stage on Friday, April 12, featuring a dance instructor to make sure you get your moves just right. After you take advantage of a free lesson, grab a glass of wine and an unconventional food pairing and hang out with your friends at “the castle.” As you move into the tasting room, you’ll find a seat for everyone in your gang (and you’ll soon meet your own personal tasting steward). Danced your cares away? Cozy up by the roaring fire or relax under an expansive pergola overlooking the vineyards. Ah, we could get used to this.

2. Cheers to Wine, Tacos and Tequila with Bodega de Edgar

Calling all SoCal locals! Bodega de Edgar knows how to have a (very, very) good time. Why stop at wine when you can also have tequila and tacos too? Meet winemaker Edgar Torres this Friday, April 12 at Vino at Trios in Alhambra, California and celebrate on the patio from 5 to 7 p.m. By “celebrate,” we mean: eat, drink, and generally have yourself a flat-out ball. The tequila and taco bar will be overflowing with delicious fixings (mmm guac) and you’ll be privy to a complimentary appetizer, wine flight and margarita. Some say less is more. In this case, we say more is most certainly more! Pass the hot sauce. We’re looking to overdo it.

3. Traverse the Pacific Coast Wine Trail with Harmony Cellars

Salty sea air does a body good. Travel the Pacific Coast Wine Trail on Cinco de Mayo, Sunday, May 5 and discover more than just seashells by the sea shore. Highway 1 is home to some of the most enviable coastline in the world and—at least we think—some of the best wines just west of Paso Robles. From Coastal Burgundian varieties grown on the coast to robust Bordeaux and Rhone varieties grown in nearby Paso Robles, the wines of the Pacific Coast Wine Trail are perfect for your next spring adventure. At Harmony Cellars, surf meets wine (and one epic sunset). On Cinco de Mayo, enjoy a unique “fiesta bite” paired with a special wine at each of the six wineries on the trail. With grub prepared by Boni’s Tacos, you’ll want for nothing. Yes, the pairing is included with purchase of your tasting, and it goes without saying: no reservations required. Just come as you are, flip flops and all!

4. Soak up the Sun with Villa San Juliette

Grab your good shades and head for the wide, open blue. This Cinco de Mayo, Sunday, May 5, join Villa San Juliette Vineyard and Winery for the kind of dining experience California dreams are made of. From 6-9 p.m., guests will nosh at the stunning Oceanpoint Ranch in Cambria, where special guest and winemaker Dan Smith will share a plethora of award winning wines paired with a unique Cinco de Mayo themed tasting menu. The four-course meal (prepared by Executive Chef Thomas Drahos of Tin Canteen) will be nothing short of thrilling, featuring fresh seafood and a hefty portion of zest. Yes, this is the perfect occasion to wear that fancy white linen suit! Just be careful.

5. Get in the Wine Fest Spirit

There’s no bigger Paso Robles Wine event than Paso Wine Fest (the name says it all). This year’s four day celebration of small town charm and world class wine promises to be larger than life! Will you be there to witness the spectacle? Held May 16-19, expect to sample hundreds of delicious, award winning offerings along with uniquely curated events. On Friday, May 17, select wineries will feature their Library, Reserve, White/Rosé, and Futures complemented by fresh and local gourmet bites at the RESERVE Event. Start your morning on Saturday, May 18 with a fun and educational Winemaker Seminar. Following the seminar, more than 70 wineries come together in the Paso Robles Downtown City Park to showcase their wines during the Grand Tasting. This year, the fest kicks off the weekend with an all-inclusive family style bottle share dinner that will allow for lots of conversation and general goodwill among table mates. Join three of Paso’s best producers for The Hatch’s three-course meal and some killer Paso wine (advance purchase only. Seating extremely limited). Featured winemakers include Janis Pelletiere of Pelletiere Vineyard & Winery, known for showcasing elegant Italian varietals. Here, we’re all family, and you’re the guest of honor.

5 Bright Thanksgiving Wine Ideas

There’s no Thanksgiving without turkey, and—if you ask us—there’s no turkey without wine! It can be totally hectic around the house (and the kitchen) this time of year, but don’t fret about the wine pairing, serving, and pouring. These 5 no brainers will keep you calm and collected. Well, in the wine department, at least!

1. Get a little air

Save time and skip the heavy decanting. Many reds don’t need aeration as much as you’d think, which is good because you’ve forgotten to make the mashed potatoes. Eek! The following reds, as wonderful as they are, do not need fancy decanters: Light-bodied, naturally less tannic reds like Pinot Noir, Burgundy, Beaujolais, and Cotes du Rhone, lighter Zinfandels, and lighter-bodied Chiantis, and Dolcettos. Added bonus: All of these wines are great for pairing with Thanksgiving flavors and won’t overpower that all-important turkey gravy.

While light in appearance, Rails Nap 2014 Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County offers up an array of wild cherry, blueberry jam, tobacco and anise. Like cozy fall togetherness in a glass!

2. Claim your cup

When your whole family shows up for dinner, things can get a little crazy…especially when people start forgetting which glass is theirs! Avoid a full on fight and keep the record straight amongst aunts, cousins, and nosy neighbors (who invited them?). You can easily craft a DIY wine charm before turkey day. Check out these nifty, super easy ideas:

Everyone will be fighting over the last drop of Pear Valley Winery 2014 Zinfandel. With a lively garnet color and aromas of stewed plum, boysenberry, dusty cocoa, and dried sage, it tastes (and smells) like the perfect autumn afternoon.

Mapping and Directions to Pear Valley

3. Chill early

With so much to do, you may not be exactly “chilling” before dinner, but you should be chilling your whites, and even some reds, too. It’s easy to forget, so make sure to make room between the Tetris game of Tupperware stacking up in your icebox. Bottles should be placed inside the fridge for about 30 minutes prior to drinking to cool down to between 49-55 degrees. Not sure which whites to serve this year? When it comes to Thanksgiving flavors, you can’t go wrong with a subtle Rose, an un-oaked Chardonnay, a dry Riesling, or Gewürztraminer.

Properly chilled Villa San Juliette 2017 Rose Reserve is a great crowd-pleaser for the holidays. The pleasantly salmon-hued wine bursts with stone fruit character, poached apple, apricot, and rose water. Yes, grandma will love it too.

Buy now
Mapping and Directions to Villa San Juliette

4. Do dessert

Hurray! It’s finally the season of for deep, decedent flavors and—yes—all the desserts! We suggest splurging on a festive bottle of dessert wine paired alongside your pumpkin and apple pie. Nothing ushers in the holiday season quite like a small goblet of something sumptuously sweet.

Rotta’s Zin Port Leather and Lace is fruit forward, with flavors of blackberry and raspberry (and a touch of minerality and jamminess). Serve in the cutest little glasses. Toast boisterously!

Buy now
Mapping and Directions to Rotta Winery

5. Dishes be damned

If you’re feeling frazzled about what will surely be a tower of dirty dishes leftover in your sink, just follow our lead. Take a deep breath, purchase the plastic, recyclable wine glasses and toss in the recycling after pie. Life changing, right?
