Discover these 8 Must-Visit Wineries in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles

  • October 15, 2024
  • By Aidan Simpson

Nestled in the heart of Paso Robles, the mountainous Willow Creek District showcases the premium side of Paso Robles. Known for its picturesque landscapes, cooling coastal breezes, and rich limestone soils, as well as some of our oldest vineyards.

In the Willow Creek District, you’ll find a focus on Rhône varieties like Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, and even some world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Many of the wineries here emphasize sustainable farming practices and small-lot, artisanal production, ensuring that each bottle reflects the essence of this extraordinary region.

A Snapshot of Willow Creek District

History and Terroir

Established in 2014, the Willow Creek District benefits from its unique microclimate, with cool Pacific breezes and morning fog rolling in from the nearby Templeton Gap. This cooling effect, along with hilltop terraces that are chock-full of fractured shale, rocks and even fossils (the west side of Paso was once an ocean floor), allows vineyards to thrive. There’s a reason the Willow Creek District has the densest concentration of vineyards and wineries in Paso, and it all begins with the soil.

Notable Varietals
Willow Creek is famous for its Rhône and Bordeaux varieties, including Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier. The combination of long growing seasons, dramatic diurnal temperature shifts, and mineral-rich soils creates wines that smell elegant yet have ripe tannins and powerful structures – something that winemakers will tell you is very difficult to achieve.

These conditions, along with the winemakers who are contributing to the area’s evolution, mean the wines can go head-to-head with their European counterparts without a problem.

8 Must-Visit Wineries in Willow Creek District

Écluse Wines

Écluse Wines is a family-owned, boutique winery located in Paso Robles’ sought-after Westside. Dedicated to producing limited production, handcrafted, and award-winning wines from their very own Lock Vineyard, Écluse offers a unique tasting experience right in their barrel room, where visitors can often sample directly from the barrels with the winemaker!

Their focus is really on Bordeaux and Rhône varietals, with a special nod going to their award-winning Zinfandel. The winery’s intimate atmosphere and dedication to quality make it a must-visit for any wine lover. Their tasting room is also well known for its sweeping vineyard views, and when combined with their regular live music events it’s the perfect place to start getting to know this region.

Address: 1520 Kiler Canyon Rd, Paso Robles, CA 93446
Hours:
Thursday–Sunday, 11AM to 4PM

Pelletiere Estate

Pelletiere Estate is a hidden gem for lovers of Italian-style wines. This female-owned winery, founded by the mother-daughter team of Janis Pelletiere and Morgan Stepp, brings a taste of Italy to California’s Central Coast.

What makes Pelletiere special? They are champions of lesser-known Italian varieties. Here you can sip on unique wines like Montepulciano and Lagrein, which often sell out each year. These estate-grown wines showcase the limestone-rich soil of the region, giving them a distinctive character that any wine enthusiasts will appreciate. The winery’s sustainable farming practices and tailored tasting experiences offer visitors a chance to connect with Italian winemaking traditions.

Want to stay a little longer? Book one of Pelletiere Estates’ modern wine country retreats: The Pelletiere Estate Winery Farmhouse offers stunning vineyard views and a stylish, comfortable oasis. Meanwhile, the winery’s Eastwood Casita Vacation Rental is bright, airy and spacious. Both allow visitors to wake up in a working vineyard, all while staying close to downtown Paso Robles attractions.

Don’t miss the chance to try Pelletiere’s hard-to-find Italian varietals. These wines are only available at the estate, making your visit a truly unique experience in Paso Robles wine country.

lone madrone tasting room exterior

Lone Madrone

Lone Madrone is a winery that captures the essence of artisanal winemaking. Led by the passionate and innovative British-born winemaker Neil Collins, this winery has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting in California.

Lone Madrone specializes in Rhône-style wines, with a particular emphasis on grapes from dry-farmed vineyards. Collins, a two-time Paso Robles Wine Industry Person of the Year, is known for his obsession with finding the perfect vineyard sites. His focus on Paso’s mountainous westside vineyards has led to the creation of unique, terroir-driven wines that truly reflect their origin.

The winery’s tasting room offers a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere that perfectly captures Paso’s laid-back vibe. Visitors can enjoy their award-winning wines while picnicking in hidden corners of the estate, surrounded by soothing foliage and rustic charm.

One of Lone Madrone’s most popular events is their famous “Burger Sundays.” This weekly gathering transforms the winery into a gourmet burger haven. Another elevated experience is their Roots Pairing experience. This tasting is in-depth and educational; the food created by Chef Jeremy Scott and the wine pairings bring a whole new dimension to the experience (check out this video highlighting the experience).

Address: 3750 CA-46 West, Templeton, CA 93465
Hours: Open daily, 10:30AM–5PM

Four Lanterns

Four Lanterns Winery is another family-owned gem nestled in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. Located on a picturesque 35-acre estate in the Templeton Gap, this winery also specializes in Rhône and Bordeaux-style wines, taking full advantage of the area’s unique terroir. They offer visitors a warm and inviting experience in Pasos’ unique and unpretentious style.

The winery’s name pays homage to the owners’ four daughters, reflecting the deep family roots that run through every aspect of the operation. Jackie and Steve Gleason, who acquired the property in 2013, have transformed what was once an apple farm and later an herb farm into a thriving vineyard and winery.

Visitors to Four Lanterns can enjoy a peaceful afternoon sipping wine on the winery’s expansive green lawn, perfect for picnics with family and friends. During the summer months, Four Lanterns comes alive with its Sunday Summer Concert Series.

These popular events combine great wine, delicious food, and live music from various genres, creating a lively atmosphere under the majestic oak trees. It’s an excellent opportunity to experience the full charm of Paso Robles wine country.

Denner Vineyards

Ron Denner carved out a nice slice of heaven for everyone to enjoy in Paso Robles wine country. After traveling the state seeking the perfect parcel of land to grow grapes and produce outstanding wines, he found exactly what he was looking for in the western reaches of Paso Robles in 1997. Denner Vineyards, located out on the southwest side of Paso Robles, is a delight on every level.

To start, the winery estate and vineyards are completely solar-powered and all aspects of farming are sustainable. Any water that is used on the property is filtered through an elaborate, high-tech filtration system that sources out of the nearby wetlands. The Denner team is top-notch and executes the philosophy of Ron Denner precisely how he intended; the wines are powerful and finessed.

You can taste in one of two tasting rooms; Comus Vista (on the patio with breathtaking views of the landscape) or Comus Crush (view of the production facility). Both options deliver an amazing tasting experience and the wines, while not inexpensive, are beyond brilliant. The wines are also cleverly labeled with names such as Mother of Exiles, Ditch Digger and Dirt Worshipper, the latter has featured twice on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list.

Address: 5414 Vineyard Drive, Paso Robles, CA 93446

Booker Vineyard

Booker Vineyard, founded by Eric and Lisa Jensen in 2001, combines sustainable practices with a rich historical legacy. The vineyard, originally purchased by the philanthropic Booker brothers in the 1920s, is now fully organic and in the process of earning Regenerative Organic Certification.

Booker’s stunning estate and tasting room (a marvel of modern, eco-conscious design) provide an elegant yet relaxed experience. The modern tasting room architecture conveys a stylish vibe, and the property features numerous spots that give you the experience you want, whether that’s playing bocce or just staring at the vineyard vistas.

Whilst the reds steal the show with the texture and big mouth feel, dont miss out on their White and Rhône-style rosé, aptly named Pink. It’s a stunning color and a really fun wine to enjoy a hot day.

Address: 2644 Anderson Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446
Hours: Open daily, 10AM–4PM

Hidden Gems in Willow Creek District

Clos Solene

Clos Solène is not just a winery; it’s a living, breathing love story set against the backdrop of Paso Robles’ rolling hills. Founded in 2007 by Guillaume and Solène Fabre, this boutique winery is the culmination of a journey that spans continents and generations.

Their 17-acre estate is a testament to their shared vision and hard work. Visitors can experience this passion firsthand through the Elevated Estate Excursion & Tasting. This unique tour, conducted via Polaris off-road vehicle, offers an intimate look at Guillaume’s winemaking philosophy. From discussing soil impact on grapes to viewing bud break, the tour can be as detailed or relaxed as guests prefer.

A highlight of the tour is the journey to the estate’s highest point, where a yoga pad sits amidst breathtaking views of clear blue skies, green valleys, and vibrant vineyards teeming with flowers and bees.

Clos Solène has gained a reputation as one of Paso Robles’ premier wine-tasting experiences, largely through word-of-mouth recommendations. Visitors consistently praise the outstanding quality of the wines and the extraordinary tasting experience.

For wine enthusiasts seeking a blend of romance, expertise, and exceptional wines, Clos Solène offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of Paso Robles wine country.

Address: 2040 Niderer Rd, Paso Robles, CA 93446

Jada Vineyard and Winery

Jada Vineyard and Winery encapsulates the best of Paso Robles wine country – stunning views, sustainable practices, and wines that speak eloquently of their origin.

The tasting room, aptly named the Tree House, is perched amidst the vineyard, offering breathtaking views of the estate. Here, guests can explore flights of Jada’s critically acclaimed wines, guided by knowledgeable staff. The experience can be enjoyed on the heated outdoor deck or inside the bar, both of which provide stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape.

For those seeking a more relaxed experience, Jada’s back patio is the perfect spot to unwind. The shaded outdoor “Oak Lounge” offers the perfect setting for picnics (feel free to pack your own), overlooking the vineyard and Westside Paso’s rolling hills.

Whether you’re a serious wine enthusiast or simply looking for a beautiful spot to relax with a glass in hand, Jada offers an experience that lingers long after the last sip.

Zobèto Wines

Zobèto Wines is more than just a wine producer – it’s a family’s leap of faith. The winery, still in its early days, is being carefully built from the ground up, with the aim of producing something meaningful.

Owned and operated by Cliff and Christie Cate, Zobèto Wines emerged after years of visiting Paso Robles and feeling an inexplicable pull to the region. The Cates decided to leave behind their conventional path and dive headfirst into the world of winemaking.

What sets Zobèto apart is their deeply personal approach to winemaking and hospitality. Visitors to the winery are treated to an intimate experience, often hosted by Cliff and Christie themselves. These limited tastings offer guests not just a chance to sample exquisite wines, but also to become part of the Zobèto story and witness its ongoing evolution.
