At Pianetta Winery, the philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: they’re farmers who happen to make exceptional wine. This fourth-generation California farming family produces critically acclaimed Italian and Bordeaux-style reds from their 68-acre estate vineyard in San Miguel’s Indian Valley, earning multiple Wine Enthusiast 92-point ratings while maintaining the unpretentious authenticity that sets them apart from Paso Robles’ more polished operations.
A pilot’s dream lands in the vineyards
After growing up farming, John Pianetta spent two tours flying Navy missions over Vietnam before logging 25 years as a commercial pilot— but his roots always pulled him back to the soil. In 1996, he purchased a 95-acre ranch tucked into Indian Valley’s terraced hillsides, seven miles north of San Miguel, and planted vines the following year. When local winemakers tasted his Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, they urged him to highlight the vineyard and start making his own wine. The first vintage—369 cases of 2002 Estate Cabernet— launched what has become one of the Central Coast’s most beloved boutique wineries.
Today, John’s daughter Caitlin Pianetta shares winemaking duties, making them part of just 10% of California wineries led by women winemakers. A Cal Poly agricultural business graduate, she transitioned from marketing into the cellar, bringing fresh perspective while honoring her father’s meticulous, scientific approach. Their collaboration produces wines that consistently score 90+ points from Wine Enthusiast, with the Petite Sirah and Tuscan Nights blend each earning 4.2-star ratings on Vivino from hundreds of reviewers.
What sets Pianetta Winery apart
The Italian varietal focus distinguishes Pianetta in a region dominated by Rhône styles. Their Tuscan Nights blend earned 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, with reviewer Matt Kettmann noting its “easygoing aromas of dark, crushed stone, pepper and herb.” The Sangiovese receives equally enthusiastic responses, described by visitors as “Super-Tuscan style” excellence.
Then there’s the legendary Jug Wine—born from a 2009 bottling mishap when the winery ran short of standard bottles. Rather than waste the wine, the Pianettas filled traditional Italian jugs and invited club members to “help drink away their sorrows.” It sold out in one day and became a cult favorite, featuring blends created by our club members.
The Wine Thieves club offers rare flat-rate pricing at $30 per bottle—unusual in an industry of tiered pricing. Members receive 12 or 24 bottles annually with 20-25% discounts on additional purchases, complimentary tastings for groups up to six, and access to club-exclusive wines.
