1. Chronic Cellars Lawn Games
Game on. Chronic Cellars is all about serving up serious sophisticated wines that still know how to have a whole lot of fun. Chill out with a glass of the humorously named “Sofa King Bueno,” a popular red blend around these parts, while the kids pick up a rousing game of corn hole, pool, or horseshoes. Kick back and stay a while. No one is worried about how long you’ve “camped out” here. Quench your need to stretch out and unplug (and their burning need to get out of the car and let off a little steam). Sure, you might get asked to referee a few games, but who knows; perhaps you’ll turn into the one arguing passionately over half-points!
Lunch is served (and everyone will eat it). Lone Madrone is known for elegant terroir driven wines, but that doesn’t make this tasting room stuffy. In fact, the folks at Lone Madrone believe that killer wine is best paired with killer barbecue! Gather under the oaks with your clan for a longtime tradition: Burger Sundays at Lone Madrone, which kick off every Sunday through Oct. 17 from 11:30-2:30 p.m. Choose from lamb, beef, or vegetarian mushroom burgers (for your environmentally conscious pre-teen). The only rule is to have fun, eat, drink, and be merry (play corn hole for extra points)! Well, that and put the phone down while eating.
Pinot noir for the grown ups and play time for the kiddos? Check and check! Grab a stellar wine tasting at Sextant Winery in Edna Valley (which also boasts a tasting room in Paso Robles on Hwy 46 West). Nosh on some gourmet deli items then head next door, where you’ll find the Old Edna Townsite. Home to historic structures and even an old gypsy wagon, it’s truly is a sight to behold—like something torn from a history book! A self-guided tour is perfect for the kids, who will have a blast imagining just what life was like in Edna more than a hundred years ago. Perhaps they’ll even start to appreciate just how easy their weekly chores really are.
4. Rio Seco Winery Fifth Friday Music and Merriment
Party on, family! End the summer with a bang at Rio Seco Winery’s famously popular Fifth Fridays Music & Merriment party slated for this August 31! Kids and their parental units will love grooving to the sounds of Back Bay Betty, a local band known for its fusion of rhythm and blues, rock n roll and soul sounds. I mean, every generation can agree on that, right? The little ones will be overjoyed to hear that wood-fired pizza is on the menu courtesy of Gypsy Flame Food Truck, and, thanks to a plethora of gourmet toppings that transcend basic “pepperoni,” so will you.
