Paso Robles may be a world class wine region (and quite possibly the closest scenery to heaven on earth), but even the most dedicated winemakers need to take a break from the Paso’s beautiful—and hot—vineyards this time of year to get a little RNR. Luckily, the beach is only a few miles to the West! Yes, even hard working wine industry folks are known to make a break for the coast before the toil of harvest creeps in (surfing is a great way to shake off all those hours of pruning). Join in on this seasonal tradition and bring your best bottle (and beach read) along for the adventure. Whether you head to San Simeon, Cambria, Cayucos, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, Montana de Oro or Grover Beach, we know just what you need to kick back, relax, and declare, “It’s wine-o-clock somewhere.”
1. Clavo Cellars 2015 Viognier
The forecast is bright, indeed. The beautiful golden color and intense aromas of ripe bananas, fresh cut honeysuckle, and orange blossom is sunny perfection, California style. A fresh macadamia nut aroma with a hint of toasted hazelnut offers up a joyful escape for frazzled senses. Rich and full-bodied, this wine brings enough bright acidity to balance the silky banana bread taste in your mouth. Lean back in that beach chair and let out a long breath. Summer vacation has truly arrived.
2. 2017 Pear Valley Albarino
Throw on all the white linen you own and get ready for a sophisticated take on a cool summer white. Delicate aromas of creamed honey, preserved lemon, jasmine, and almond paste greet your nose (which may make you wonder: “Why can’t sunscreen smell this good?”). On the palate, a splash of Mandarin orange, lemon curd, star fruit, and chalk. Like that first dive into the ocean, this wine begins crisp and acid-driven before softening into a creamy roundness.
3. Kiamie Wines 2018 White Kuvee
Peachy keen dreams await. This new vintage offers aromas that envelope the glass with real density and weight and a crisp, seemingly faux-dry finish. No, this is not your grandma’s white wine spritzer. The pungent hints of peach schnapps, tarragon, and spiced applesauce characteristic of Grenache Blanc round out and add spunk to rich Viognier. Talk about a tasty wave!
4. Harmony Cellars 2018 Rosato Vivo
Summer is all about simplicity. This wine is all berries, watermelon, and citrus. Needs we say more? Rosato Vivo means “lively rosé” in Italian, so that gives you a good hint of what you’re getting into with this playful, off-dry beach companion. Made from Syrah grapes, it boasts aromas of ripe melon, berries and citrus; on the palate, fresh fruit salad vibes are present. You’ll be the envy of the entire beach with this irresistible crowd pleaser. Pack a few!
5. Chronic Cellars 2017 Kindly Swallows
Seabirds might try to take your lunch, but they’ll never get their hands on this pink princess of a wine (your friends will be too busy passing it back and forth). With pretty notes of juicy watermelon, zesty green apple, raspberry and eucalyptus, think of it as a bright and zesty swallow, with a light minerality that flits across the tongue.
