Hearst Ranch Winery began as a result of a coincidental encounter one day between Steve Hearst and Jim Saunders at a Hearst Ranch tour fundraiser for the Hearst Cancer Resource Center. Collectively, their shared vision on sustainable agriculture, resource protection and historical preservation provided the common thread that led to a deep friendship and enduring philanthropic devotion to the community.
Their hand-crafted wines celebrate their sound agriculture practices and impeccable winemaking. Located just off Hwy 1, below Hearst Castle, in the historic Sebastian General Store built in 1852, it’s a stone’s throw from the stunning San Simeon Bay. One of our favorite outings is to visit the winery, savor their wines, grab a gourmet Hearst Ranch burger at the adjoining Sebastian’s Restaurant, and then take a stroll along the pristine beach up to the point where one can easily spot sea otters, seals and sometimes a whale or two. On occasion we will rent a kayak and explore the inlet that changes with the tide.
Wine Pick: 2016 Rosé “Julia”
(Composition: 42% Petit Verdot, 24% Petite Sirah, 23% Syrah & 11% Tempranillo)
This lovely rosé honors the iconic architect, Julia Morgan, who is best known for her commission of Hearst Castle. Her story is extraordinary, including becoming the first female student to earn a degree from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
We love Julia’s faint violet hue and nose that is flush with bright raspberry, rose petal and a hint of peach. Juicy and lush flavors of tropical fruit and peach lead with bright acidity that delivers a nicely balanced mouthfeel. Steely mineralogy extends the clean finish. Chill this wine to 50˚ and enjoy its bright, intriguing flavors that embrace the genius of Julia. Click here to purchase Hearst Ranch Winery, 2016 Rosé “Julia”.
