5 Things to Do in Paso Wine Country (That Aren’t Wine!)
PasoWine
Sipping wine is a beloved pastime here in Paso Robles Wine Country. But what—you might ask—do we do with our days when we aren’t uncorking bottles or tending to our vineyards? Well, we’ll tell you! From exploring the great outdoors to discovering new ways to thrill our taste buds, there’s so much to do, see and savor! Next time you come to visit, be sure to check out these fun wine-adjacent activities happening in and around our coveted slice of California.
Hot Air Balloon and Helicopter tours
Up, up and away: Experience Paso from the sky when you book a hot air balloon or helicopter ride over our rolling green hills! Ready to take flight? Adelaide Inn offers a customizable, high-flying service that will have you on cloud nine before lunch! Enjoy sunrise hot air balloon flights seven days a week and complimentary champagne and breakfast served after your airborne excursion. If an action-packed helicopter tour is more your thing, you’ll be glad to know that this is also an option (you and three of your favorite people are invited along for the ride). Plus, the hotel’s “Wine and Wave” helicopter tour offers up breathtaking coastal views you won’t want to miss. Want to combine your elevated adventure with some world class wine? Enjoy wine tours, tastings and even vineyard landings! Captain speaking: You’re in for one heck of a good time.
Hop in the saddle: Galloping along the scenic vineyards of Paso Robles Wine Country might sound like a romantic dream, but we can assure you this can be your reality! With plenty of rustic trails snaking across the Paso Robles Wine Country region, you can easily book a guided ride that fits your style and skill level (newbies welcome!). Ready to giddy up? Allegretto Vineyard Resort offers up a 1.5 horseback ride through Cass Vineyards, courtesy of Central Coast Trail Rides. Their popular “Sip and Saddle” package even comes with two days of luxury accommodations and free wi-fi (you know—so you can post that obligatory Instagram pic). Time to trot into your own western movie!
Most people are shocked to hear how close to the beach we really are (especially if you’re visiting our popular Westside). Drive Highway 46 West the approximate 20 miles to the beach, stopping at exciting tasting rooms along the way. This dynamic route has no shortage of interesting road stops to enjoy: Why not stop at Donati Family Vineyard and pick up a bottle or two along the way? Open seven days a week from 11 am to 4 p.m., you’ll find a lovely outdoor seating area overlooking a particularly scenic portion of the Highway 46 West Wine Trail. Afterward, head west to Cambria’s Moonstone Beach, where the sunsets are legendary.
Growing strong: We don’t just grow excellent wine grapes in Paso Robles—we also grow amazing produce! Explore and celebrate the many farms, ranches, and artisan food producers in Paso Robles by heading to one of the city’s weekly markets: Tuesday 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 to 1 p.m. at Paso Robles City Park and Friday 9 a.m. to noon in the Walmart parking lot on Niblick and River Road. Be sure to also check out our regional Farm Trail Map courtesy of FARMstead ED or head to one of the city’s many ag-centered events. In fact, May 7th brings about the anticipated Lavender and Olive Festival, hosted in downtown Paso Robles. When you’re done shopping the stalls, head to one of the dozens of downtown tasting rooms waiting nearby. Spend happy hour at Iron Oaks Winery, just a few blocks from Paso’s town square, and you’ll see why we’re known for our laid back attitude and warm hospitality. Note: You can also pick up some locally raised beef while you’re there!
Belly up: Did you know that Paso Robles Wine Country is home to tasting rooms that feature full service sit-down restaurants? If this is news to you, check out our latest blog on the subject here. Aside from these incredible tasting room-kitchen hybrids, you can also find awesome eats in downtown Paso Robles. Experience a fresh twist on Mexican fare at Fish Gaucho, home of refreshing craft cocktails, tequila and mezcal. Thomas Hill Organics is a mainstay for farm-fresh cuisine and for elevated pub fare, you simply must try Pappy McGregor’s, ground zero for crave-worthy comfort food served with a Paso palate in mind.
